stonehenge

at the begining game the mini map is focused into your city if you buld the stone henge it zooms out to the real size of the map.

at first your civ is the center of the map more or less, and the more land you uncover, the larger the map gets, but though there are some clues, you never know where your country fits into the world map. Stonehenge centers the map at the Equator and Prime Meridian, so now you can see that the land mass you occupy is in the north eastern (or wherever) corner of the map.

you may already know this, but in case you don't...

discovering the tech Calendar (which obsoletes stonehenge) also centers the world map. so eventually everybody knows the size of the world, whether they built SH or not.

Stonehenges earlier-than-Calendar world map centering compensates for the loss of exploration that you pay for building the earliest wonder.

So what is world map centering good for anyways (other than growdth expansion):
It shows you how large the planet/map is, dont forget that there is a "random map size" option !
It shows you your placement along the borders, there is also a "random world map wrap" option sometimes. You might prefer to expand to the center of the map if it does not wrap. theres a high chance that 1 of the 2 borders does not wrap with random wrap.
It helps planning on circumnavigating and diplomacy.

I have never built Stonehenge because I care about centering the map, but I always build it, every game.

Centering the map seems largely useless since you can tell rather quickly how far from the equator you are just by paying attention to the terrain types your scouts are uncovering. Where you are East-West doesn't matter since the world "wraps" anyway.

That said, just like the post ahead of me, I build just because I like to have it. :)

That's awesome, I never realized what the center the map thing did and I've played a bazillion games, lol :p Nice to learn something new!

The thing is all you have to do is a circuit around your capital with your first warrior to know where you're going to build your 2nd city. And you always want to be scouting to know the lay of the land anyways. By the time you need to really know where you are relative to the rest of the world calendar is already on board. I never build stonehenge because there are so many other more important priorities early in the game. If I want an early prophet I'll go for the oracle instead.
