Resisting the temptation to hijack a current thread with Scandinavian posters, I'll ask here. Is this Swedish? Can someone give a rough translation of what Baron O von S was up to? I'm particularly interested in objectives and any info regarding the composition of his troops.

I come from Norway, wich also is a part of Scandinavia(!) . Since Swedes, Danes and Norwegians can understand each other, I was able to translate this. This is definately a Swedish text. It was a bit hard to understand the context, since this frase is probably just a taken out in the middle of a text. But here we go :)

The acation for the start of the uprising in 1916, was a Turkish-German expedition under Baron Othmar von Stotzingen. The plan with this was to work together with Khairy Beys troops in southern Arabia, and to open for new operations against the Entente Powers. It was thought to establish communication with Paul von Lettow-Vorbecks' troops in German East-Africa, and even to build a propagandabuereu aimed for Somalia, Abessinien, Sudan and possibly India. Arrangements even found place for weapon changes for "understöd(?)" of rebellions in Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan. Husain saw this to be such a great descision, that he despite being inferior in artillery support, descided to attack.

Afterwards we can tell that von Stotzingers expedition could have surprised the British controlled Aden and combined with war delivery for Somalia completeley block the Red sea for the Entente Powers.

Don't mention it!

I see that by now Eivind has allready replied (I wrote half of this a few hours ago, and came back to finnish it off now), I'll just post the first part I'd allready typed anyway :)

One reason for the start of the rebelion in june 1916 was a turko-german expidition under Baron Othmar von Stotzingen. The aim of this was to act in cooperation with Khairy beys troops in southern Arabia, and to open up for new operations against the Entente. The intention was to create communication with Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbecks forces in German East Africa, but also to form a propaganda agency directed against Somaliland, Abesinia, Sudan and possibly India.
Arrangements where made for weapons to be sent as ways of supporting the revolts in Eritrea, Somaliland and Sudan.
Hussain considered this threat to be big enough to act even despite his inferior artillery.

Long story... been very active with my studies lately and helping out with the new students (i.e. lots of socializing)... and met with a lot of nice people, including a very special woman... ;) I also had a minor identity crisis and had lots of doubt about the direction of my life etc..... But now I'm back! :) (sortof), -although I'll probably not be as active on the civ arena as I used to. But I do plan to finish up on my 2 great scenario projects. They're already far done in most ways... they're mostly lagging because of a couple of undecided issues... but all the framework is there. :)

Tack (Thanks?). Sorry about the Norwegian omission. Same for Finland (or are they not real Scandinavians).;) Iceland?

Morten, hope you don't mind that I didn't wait for your email reply. I figured you were busy at the beginning of an academic year. When I saw how many Scandinavians post here, I leapt at the chance. Congrats on the very special woman!

Sounds like it was taken from Liddell Hart. In "Lawrence of Arabia" he wrote this about Stotzingen. "A special Turkish force under Khairi Bey was being formed in Constaninople for dispatch by rail to Medina, whence it was intended to march to Mecca....The force was accompanied by a German mission of small size but considerable importance under Maj. von S....His orders were to set up a wireless station on the coast in order to open up communication with German East Africa...to direct anti-British propaganda in the Sudan, Abysinnia, and Somaliland." These preparations hastened the onset of the Arab Hejaz revolt in 1916.

I was hoping to get a little more info about the force's composition and was piqued by "artilleri" and "krigsmaterielleveranser". I lost the URL, but I'll post it when I find it again.

Actually it's just "Tak". That's at least what it is in Denmark, I think it is so too in Norway and Sweden. :)

krigsmaterielleveranser directly translates into
war material deliveries, for which the term "arms deliveries" is probably better.

I don't know if you actually wanted that translation, I'm just compensating for the fact that I was too late to respond to your first post... :D

Live and learn :)...

They made a couple of one-off show a couple of years ago, but they were meant to have sucked :( (I've only seen the last 5 minutes of the milenium special).
