Well, I think that Swiss Mercenaries not balanced very well. They were elite troops, with a very long and heavy training time, so they should cost more then 30 shields, maybe 40 (or 50).
But with higher cost they should have better stats. They were used to attack, not only to defense, and they were good in attacking indeed. I would say 3.3 or 4.3 stats, and maybe a removal to Gunpowder (maybe).

Any comments welcome!

If they cost 40 credits and were a 4/3/1 units, why build them? hey are a kinght without the mobility. As a 3/3 unit, why build them? Longbowmen, Med Inf, & knight all have a better offense. Just add a few pikemen to the mex for defense adn you are better off not building them.

As it is, the are a cheap defensive unit that has a long life. I love playing the Dutch, and hate fighting them. In my opinion, they are fine as is.

As they are, the 1.4.1 Swiss Merc is a very useful unit. They are better at defending than a pikeman and cost the same, and they are as good at defending as a musketman for half the cost. I think they are perfectly fine as a UU the way they are. If you want to argue that Swiss mercs were used for attack, as well as defense, that's fine. But then you'd have to bump up the attack stats on spearmen, hoplites, musketmen, riflemen, etc. because they were all used offensively, too.

I think your proposed stats are a bit too weak. A 3.3 unit that comes with gunpowder? That has the stats of a Roman Legion a whole era later, and 40 sheilds would be a higher cost! I could live with 4.3, 40 shields if this unit replaced medieval infantry (So the Swiss Merc is a Med. Inf. with an extra point of defense at no extra cost). But I would still prefer the original Swiss Merc, since it is truly a one-of-a-kind unit: the only one with defense better than 3 before musketmen. Make whatever change you want, but I'm happy with it the way it is :) .

Hi Vizurok, your are right historically, Swiss Pikemen were feared for their long pikes and halberds, and they used them offensively, no doubt.

But the problem ist playbalance. You cannot add offensive power to their already high defensive strength! That would make them too good. The same applies to the Roman Legion - the early legions were superior to most contemporary enemies, but their superiority is only represented in the Rise of Rome Conquest - in a normal Epic game, the AI would go on rampage or YOU could do the same. UU's already give some nations a real edge, e.g. Mounted Warriors and Immortals or the underestimated Gallic Swordsmen, my personal favorite.

I personally feel that offensive UU's are superior to defensive one's, but this is no excuse to make a superb defensive one a superb allround unit.

Maybe (Even though they use pikes) you can make a 5.2.1 SM to replace the MDI.
