@Killbray--thanks. Before I attack units, I do check that. I dont think I was checking too much with my bombers because I was more worried about keeping my landtroops safe. I will be sure to pay more attention to that in the future. I do check it all the time before attacking with riflemen, infrantry, naval units, etc. I will keep track better for other units.
Also--I originally had all my bombers and jets in my capital and a few other strong cities that had barracks, armory, military academies, etc. I think I had Brandenberg gate in my capital. But since Alexander was massing his troops to swarm my outskirt cities, I had to move my bombers and fighters to be in range. Several of the bombers did have auto repair, while others were set to capitalize on bombing cities.
@GhostSalsa--I agree about late game game becoming grueling and ugly. And I knew that Alex would attack eventually, particularly since we had been friends the entire game up to that point. In this game, I was very lucky that Liz did not join the fight against me. I had been slapping her around all game!
And youre right about the AI air units. They do *seem* more powerful against human players, than our air units. I know some folks will give numbers saying that its not true, but it seems my experience that the AI bombers and planes do a lot more damage.
I only planted that citadel by the city state because I was able to get access to 10 aluminum and 9 oil within those hexes. I figured it was worth it. I was going to keep a few units near it (and one in it) to keep Alex at Bay. The City State and I were allies at one time, but Alex made it his ally and that screwed me up. And by that point in the game, I was spending my money replacing units, buying an armory and stuff in my outskirt city, and figured dumping money into the CS would be a waste of gold as I could not keep up with Alex.
Anyway gang--I learned a lot from this. And I never should have let Alex gotten so big (at the end of the game, he owned about 2/3rds of the world). But during the game I had to keep Liz at bay and had concentrated on her.
By the way--the SOLs never stood a chance against my subs. I kept wiping out her navy, and took several of her cities. And then Alex delined to renew our declaration of friendship. Then I knew I was in for a fight.
