I'm doing pretty well in my games now, and I'm getting to the point where I can't find a way to develop technology really quickly. I put the research up as high as I can and I still seem to lag a little bit. Is there a certain combo that is needed to maximize research?

Baltimoretrader, What dificulty level are you playing in?

The reason I am asking you on what Difficulty level you are playing is because the higher in diffculty you are the more bonuses the AI gets .

Build libraries and universities when they become available. Switch to Republic or Democracy. Also a good Forbidden Palace placement will double all your production, including research.

Try to get a tech that the AI doesn't have and sell it to everyone, draining money that they would use for research.

Expand!!! Crank out settlers as fast as you can. The larger your empire, the more research per turn you get. Even if my cities are giving me five research per turn, 30 cities increases it quite a lot.

And you can start well with contacting small tribes.. It will give you a flying start (if you`re lucky)
