Technical Question: Artificial Intelligence

I'm doing a research project for Artificial Intelligence: an upper division Computer Science class at my University.

I was a fan of Civilization I, and haven't played any since then. I played Civilization IV a couple times through on easy, and found it very enjoyable.

For the research project, I aim to answer the following question about Civilization IV:
What of the popular artificial intelligence algorithms are used for pathfinding (or other purposes). Or if none are used, can some of the algorithms be described on a high level?

Can anyone aid me in answering these questions?

It would potentially be a good idea to email the developers with a detailed description of what you want to write about and see if anyone replies with anything useful.

Although it is a longshot, and a lot of the stuff is buried in crap, Gamedev.net sometimes has practical articles on this matter. These are, however, usually for people making small projects to get stuff to work, so I don't know if they are presented in a format good for a paper. They are more of a "get the job done" type of stuff. Hope that helps.

If you are doing research on AI then you might want to try generation5.org, hope it helps.
