Techs researchable only to some players

I wanted some techs to be researchable only to some players.
So i gave them a non-researchable tech (with "no" as prerequisites), which is a prerequisite to other techs.
But the other techs do not appear as available for researching, even to players with the special prerequisite.
Is it a limit of the game, or am i doing something wrong?
 
I'll try to answer from memory, but I'm not 100% what I tell you is fully accurate, and I don't have the time to check thoroughly! But I believe it should help you anyway.

Actually, things are a little bit more complex than that! If you follow the link below you should find all the informations you require about the "Once removed" and "Twice removed" techs. I think it's what I used in Pomarj and Discworld and it worked perfectly!

Thank you. That trick partially works; it can also be used to allow player-specific buildings (normally impossible with no-no advances).
Only problem is that the player-specific advances can be traded/stolen, so it only works when diplomacy and spying are disabled (i guess your scenarios were that way).
