I think it was first Civ 4, where if you built two airports, in your cities, you could travel a unit by air, I really loved this feature.

Do you think in new versions they will add this...or have they and I am missing it?

Still can, just need to make sure you have airports.

+50% combat experience for air units trained in this city. +2 air unit slots in Aerodrome district. Allows the ability to Airlift land units between Aerdrome districts with Airports after the Rapid Deployment civic is unlocked.

Can you airlift units from airports and drop them to airstrips? Or airstrips to airstrips?

Rapid deployment says it allows for the transport of land units between Aerodrome districts that contain Airports.

As you have a choice between aerodrome or airstrip I imagine not.... Airstrips are just for military aircraft.

In my last (pre-AND-post patch) game, I could move a unit to any hex within an airport city's borders or on/adjacent to the airport and airlift it to any hex on or adjacent to another airport (respecting stacking limits, of course). Was expecting to have to be adjacent to the airport to airlift out.

Yes must be airports to airlift, at the city of origin and the destination city. Being able to airlift is quite an investment this time around especially since you have to hard build the aerodrome first, which makes airlifting straight to the front line difficult in an offensive war far across the globe. Fortunately planes don't require such strict requirements and it's fairly easy to move an airforce around to hotspots.
