the need for war

Well i never go to war if i can help it it at least not before mod era is leaping up. I avoid war by keeping all my neighbours and any powerful civs happy with me by paying em off or gifting them. I never research any techs and im always behind in tech until theory of evolution. I but that and build it and then dont research anymore tech unless i absolutely have to. Bascially i have huge economies. Eventually they fund huge militaries and so i get quite powerful in the end. This type of strategy may not be for all but i have found it impossible to keep up with the ai in tech, so i dont even bother to try. I build defensive upgradeable units and keep em current. Ussually i buy tech when a civ gets a new defensive tech. It seems like u kiss a lot of butt in this approach but it makes squashing them all the more satisfying in the end hehe. ( this is emperor level ~ havent managed to make it work well enough for victory on deity yet).

Once when I went for the Diplomatic win, I refrained from war, but I did have to get into one war to get myself some Saltpeter, since nobody wanted to trade it to me at a reasonable price. I needed it for the sake of strategic parity.

That's usually the only reason I start wars in an otherwise "pacifist" game.

peaceful game .. ha!

I want war with humans! You all think like Americans!

Meanwhile.. in the hall of justice..

Hang on.. that's wrong thinking too.

I must kill something now...

Rain that's an interesting strategy. Many people here have suggested reducing the tech budget. You have completely eliminated it and concentrate on building a strong military. Pay off the AI, buy techs from them, and give them occasional gifts. That's probably why they leave you alone. :enlighten

I'll have to give that a try in my next game!
