I know that it all depend on what strategy you have in mind when you start a new game, but as a theme in your game, I would like to have your view on the following. What do you consider being the best: To be Loved or Feared by your opponents when you are going to play Civ 3? (Of course when you are playing single mode against the PC).
My answer is clear: A mix of both seems to be the best - whatever
your strategy seems to be! :)

"Beware of the English empire; the English people are going to rule the world again in "CIVILIZATION III""

Diplomacy is going to play a lot bigger role in Civ3, especially with the new resource system. I guess being "loved" will be more important now instead of just pounding the crap out of everybody.

I agree.
Being loved will probably be more important as access to resources will be very important, you will need other civs to want to trade with you and you will probably get a better deal if they love you.
Being hated tends to trigger the AI into signing agression containment pacts with everybody against you. This would be more important in civ3 as it would undoubtably limit your access to resources. For example if the AI civs hated you I doubt they would give you the resource you need to say build an army of tanks. :goodjob:

well in Civ2 it didn't pay to be nice: the civs ganged up on you.

at least in Civ3 there are rewards for us to be pacifists, and not solely to go blowing our non-existant reps on war.

I just can't wait. "Passively" conquering the world sounds like fun!

of course they will love me! else i will kill them all...

I WILL create a small trading empire like I have tried to do since CIVI in 1991 to no avail!

I just keep expanding...I blame the tastiness of cake.

I usually prefer to be loved (or at least not hated) by most of my neighbors. I don't mind if a few well-deserving civs fear me, though. ;)
I'm a bit nervous about having to trade for special resources. I'm a stingy player - I hate the idea of having to help someone else out in order to get what I want - I'd rather the AI civs stay poor and ignorant.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a /great/ feature. I'm just going to be sweating bullets over what I should and shouldn't be trading.

"Let those who fear me:follow me,
let those who oppose me: die!
This I command"

But in reality I will enjoy being able to diplomatically take over the world. In SMAC I always bribe, beg, borrow and steal my way to dominance. Nothing is better than having an upstart nation pick a fight with you and then they are at war with the whole planet.

i'm a pacifist myself and i go for sweet sweet love.

i hope the other civs won't gang up on the hippies this time around, but that's not very likely is it. i always hated that in civ2. here i am, minding my own business and even sharing some of my tech, when all of a sudden, everyone hates me and i haven't expanded my borders at all the last couple of hundred years.

i like to take over the world with a gentle but firm hand.

I totally agree… I hope our way of playing will be more rewording in civ III than it has been in civ I and civ II…
