I think I've found a massive disadvantage to playing ToT for a high score. Last night I was playing a game and was well ahead of the competition technologically. I decided to slow my building of the spaceship in order to develop my cities and research and go for a personal best high score. Unfortunately as soon as I researched Fut Tech 6 the game finished since no one had launched a space ship. I didn't even have time to set all my citizens to happy - result 174% (crappy compared to usual!). I suppose there is a way to stop this, apart from playing Bloodlust (or does that just stop spaceships?). I feel that if I just concentrated on research I should get the research victory easily each time (probably before 1800) but it ain't conducive to a high score.

I do not recall this happening when I have played TOT, could you confirm which game you are playing so I can check it out. Are you playing the original game, extended original or one of the weird ones.

Original game - it happens 1 to 3 turns after discovering Fut Tech 5 apparently (according to the Events file) but doesn't seem to take place if spaceships have been launched (or are being built, except by self - not sure).

How does the game end on the extended game? I will be going to Alpha centauri soon and I was wondering whether there is a turn limit. I hope there isn't because I want to get my highest score. I am raking in the points from peace because although the Viking only have three cities left they cannot break the treaty since I have no units or cities on their island.

Not sure if there is a turn limit but the game may not give you any units when you reach AC, even if patched. Very annoying. One problem is that even if it does there is very little left to research on the tech tree (and here reaching the last tech definitely does result in end of game by research win) - techs can generally be got at at least one per five turns (probably faster if you've all the wonders and are in control) giving you less than 100 turns to do whatever you want.

Well last time I went to AC I built up an army and was klling the aliens because I couldn't talk to them. I got bored eventually before I finished it. Now in my latest game I am in about 1750 and am researching a new tech every three turns (a bit less). I am miles ahead of all my competitors so I have no worries about building the spaceship first.
