Trade Route (Not a bug)

I am trading with 2 cities that I do not see on my map. Apparently my trade partner found me and established the trade route via the coast. I have the tech Sailing, but the trade partner does not. So basically I have ships that can sail, but I do not know the way (and he won't tell me the way) while he knows the way but he has no ships that can sail (and I won't tell him how to sail). A trade route is logically impossible, yet it was established anyways.

A river also counts as a trade connection, and after the invention of sailing so does a line of coastal tiles. The latter is the reason for the connection here, as there is an unbroken line of coastal tiles between New York, Washington and the cities belonging to Mansa Musa and Victoria.

By the way, just because the territories link up doesn't necessarily mean the cities are connected. They still need a road, river or coastal connection to be connected (and these don't necessarily have to fall entirely inside your territory).

There's no bug here.

There is a bug.
Washington is trading with Timbuktu, and New York is trading with some other city. I have never encountered either city.

Edit:
I think I see, I am trading with cities I can't see on the map, via the coastline. The Wash -> NY trade route was also established, but doesn't produce trade. And I only noticed I was trading with the cities after the Wash -> NY trade route founded message. Still, is it a bug that I can trade with cities I can't see or not?

Both these cities belong to Mansa Musa, and while you may not have a complete route to his cities mapped out (though you're very close, you can see most of the borders of Timbuktu), Mansa Musa does. As one of you knows of the trade connection, a trade route can form. Think of it this way, you may not have found the way to his city, but his scouts have found the way to yours.

For comparison, though there is a valid line of coastal tiles to Saladin's cities it is partially unexplored for both you and Saladin, and hence you cannot form trade routes to his cities, even though you have their exact location.
