Trading strategic resources?

I don't see how I can trade strategic resources. They don't seem to be an option on the bargaining table. I see the luxury resources listed there, but no strategic resources. I've gathered from the guidebook that I should be able to trade these. How do I do it, or is there some reason these are not listed as a trading option? I need to know PDQ cuz I only have one source of saltpeter, and Japan, China and France have all declared war on me (they had a mutual protection pact)!

You only need one source of a resource to supply your entire empire. I don't see your dilemma.

If you´ve got only one Strategic Ressource of a kind in your whole Empire, you will not be able to trade it (as eyrei already states, one Ressource is needed to supply your Empire).
Also if the Civilization you are trading with already has all the strategic Ressources you are able to trade ( i.e. in which you have Surplus Ressources [i.e. more than one deposit in your Empire] ) you also won´t be allowed to trade strategic Ressources.

Oh and if you have a Situation like you have 2 Deposits of a strategic Ressource (like Iron), trade one with another Civilization and at one time one of your deposits is exhausted (and doesn´t reappear on your Territory), then your Trading-Pact will still be fulfilled (i.e. the remaining deposit is used to fulfill the Pact) and you lose your Supply of the Ressource (i.e. you won´t be able to build any more Units/Improvements which need the Ressource)

Ah, ok, so it must be that in the games I've played, we all had at least one source of the same strategic resources. I know I only need one, but if I lose it I'm SOL, so it would be nice to line up some other supplies before that happens.

Unfortunately, you cannot plan in advance for a resource to be depleted, unless you first cut off your road leading to the one in your territory. Then you can trade for it. I have heard several theories stating that a resource will not be depleted if it is not connected to your trade network, but I have seen no proof.

The theory is that in order for a resource to get depleted, it has to be connected by road to one civ or another at the end of the turn. If there is a strategic resource that you absolutely NEED, and you only have one source of that resource, you can (theoretically) use this to arrange not to lose it. Put a stack of workers and a military unit on the resource (or a square on the road between the resource and your trade network). Then at the beginning of the turn, you build the road. During the turn, you select to build/upgrade the units that need the resource. Before you end the turn, you pillage the road.

Nope, this theory has proven to be wrong.
Strategic Ressources which are not connected to Roads also disappear. It was posted in some other Threads by a couple of people and I have also encountered disappearing Ressources which are not connected to roads.
