Sorry if this has been posted before...

I'm considering playing with the time victory condition always turned off in the hopes of juicing up the AI toward the end of the game. Too frequently in my wins I quit after the late-middle game because the AI just sits back and watches me win. (Even on Immortal) Does turing off the time victory condition have any effect on making them think of chasing another victory condition? Would be fun to have them breathing down my neck a bit more in the stretch.

I always take off the time victory condition - it just means you get a passive win, no action required.

Based on other examples of ai behaviour, I doubt they will respond any differently.

I always remove time as an option too. I'm not sure it really makes a difference anyway, since I never win any later than 1950. I do like the option of winning later than 2050, but I'm not sure it will ever happen.

I'm pretty sure turning off the time victory will have the opposite effect that you are looking for (IF you play games that normally last until 2050). After all, if there is no time limit, the AI has one less limit for it to achieve victory (ie you are giving it more breathing room). If you are close to victory near 2050, the AI should be trying to stop you, anyway.

So by turning off the time victory, the game just continues on and on until someone wins? Doesn't stop at 2050?

I don't like the time victory, so I usually turn it off. To me it seems arbitrary. It doesn't seem like valid victory at all to me. You still have the Science Victory, Domination, Cultural, or Diplomatic victory conditions. I usually go for a Science victory. You might win before 2050, but I like having more time to develop the modern technologies or to maybe explore more of the map.

The time "victory" is the only realistic one. No one will be able to militarily dominate the planet, nor will a space ship sent off to Alpha Centuri be realistic (nor would it necessarily mean that the civilization will withstand the test of time), no one will be dominated by culture in the real world, and I'm pretty sure that no one is going to vote in a "ruling civ of the world" and just obey their rule at every turn.

The time victory is the only realistic one b/c when the aliens come back in 2050, they will reward the civilization with the highest score... :D

with the new patch you can now set a max number of turns. since i like playing with future era units i put 700 turns for a standard game.

Winning via time takes way too long anyway: even in games where I've messed around after building up a gigantic lead I say enough is enough around 1950.
