I've always had some problems with Civ IV but it has always been playable depending on how tolerant I am. This new problem has appeared since installing the 1.52 patch. It runs fine in the earlier game, but in the later part when my empire is getting big and the technology is getting more advanced, the game will crash after a few turns. There are two different symptoms. In one instance, the screen will suddenly appear like the cities and units and everything are all gone - it will just show terrain and some irrigation. This lasts about 5 seconds and then returns to normal. This is usually a sign that a crash is coming in the next few turns. The real problem that comes later and is not always preceded by the aforementioned problem is that the screen goes black for a few seconds, then a message comes up "Civilization 4 has encountered an error and needs to close. Do you want to send a report of this problem..." Basically, the standard Windows XP error message. Then when it's done crashing, the graphics on my screen are on the lowest possible setting (4 colors) and can't be set on anything else. The only thing to do is restart, and then the process begins again. This problem happens more and more often in the later parts of the game (I just had it on my second turn after loading). I have an Athlon 3200 processor with 1 GB ram and a GeForce 4400 video card with 128 mb memory. The video card should meet the requirements but the game tells me it doesn't, so I don't know what the problem is there. I bought the video card specifically for the game but apparently it's not good enough. I don't think I've ever heard anyone report this specific error.
