I am a bit worried about this one. So a unit could gain a lot of bonuses, but if it's obsoleted by better units very soon, and promotes very slow, would people actually use it? I mean, I build a warrior at the beginning and get it promoted twice, then soon I could build archers, would I still try to promote the warrior for another 20 times, or just disband it and focus on the new units?

Also, how would upgrade affect the special capabilities gained from promotion? In civ3 they are all lost.

In Civ III elite status is lost, but veteran status is not.

I don't know how it'll be in Civ IV... I hope all bonuses are retained. It seems likely, considering how big a deal is being made out of this system.

I don't like giving up elite status in III, for that matter.

Yeah, my hope is that all units, in that upgrade path, will carry these bonuses through to whatever logical conclusion they might reach-rather than applying to JUST a single unit of a single type.
i.e. I hope that if your spearmen gain a bonus to 'city defense', then this will apply to the same unit-EVEN if that unit gets upgraded to pikemen or riflemen. Or, what if the city defense bonus applied to ALL spearmen, pikemen and riflemen in your civ. Truth be told, I don't know which would be the better option-though I lean towards the first one, myself.
Also, perhaps barracks and other military improvements also effect the rate at which your units accumulate experience points-for promotion purposes. That would be VERY cool ;)!

My interpretation of what I've read so far is that it seems a defacto upgrade of units may occur as they gain experience and the techs become available. I.E. Start out as a warrior, when archery is learned and if the player chooses that bonus trait the unit becomes an archery unit. By the time the modern era rolls around that warrior may be a Armored division or a paratrooper or a TOW infantry depending on what path you have them learn. In other words, all units may have all upgrade paths available; as they learn different tactical skills and learn to use new weapons they are automatically upgraded to the more modern unit.

Of coarse, this is simply what I am reading into things - :mischief: :D
