The demographics screen information is not always accurate. I have often seen my GNP reported as negative although I am top in every other category, and on closer examination I notice that whenever I am ranked last the values given for 'rival worst' are exactly the same as mine.
Some recent examples (omitting the ,000 from the soldiers)
GNP: mine -3, rival best 170, rival av. 109, rival worst -3, rank 4
Soldiers: mine 131, rival best 218, rival av. 208, rival worst 131, rank 4
I have, of course, 3 rivals, So the total of rival soldiers must be 3x208, which is 624, out of which 218 belong to the 'best' rival and 131 to the 'worst'. This leaves 275 for the 'middle' rival, a value higher than that of the 'best', which is impossible. And how my GNP became negative is a mystery to me, the more so as on the GNP graph screen only one of my rivals showed above my line.
Later in the same game I got these figures :-
GNP: mine 21, rival best 199, rival av. 150, rival worst 21, rank 4
Soldiers: mine 145, rival best 273, rival av. 251, rival worst 145, rank 4
In both the latter cases the 'middle' rival's values must be higher than the 'best' ones. And in all cases the 'worst' value is exactly the same as my value.
I believe that the calculation looks for the lowest value in each category and reports that as being a rival's, presumably on the basis that the player will never come last. Oh, if only that were true !
EDIT: more tosh. My goods 203 (rank 1), rival best 58: my crops 231 (rank 1), rival best 69. But my GNP is shown as 30 (rank 5), rival best 58.
My soldiers 150K, rival best 128K. But I have only 4 armed units, whereas my rivals have, visibly, 9,6, 5 and 5. True, I have more workers, but these are not soldiers.
My imports/exports show 104/28. Now I always thought that it was better if exports exceeded imports, so either the figures are shown in reverse order or are totally meaningless.
