In my experience, my vassals always voted for me for diplomatic victory [not in resolutions though]. Are they obliged to?

Yes, but they can vote for themselves if they are eligible for election, i.e. they built the wonder that gives the vote.

Actually, once, on Warlord difficulty, I sought a diplo/domination victory. I had vassalized all but two civs, neither of them really powerful. One of my vassals, Suleiman, was actually larger in terms of whatever qualifies for the vote (population is it?) and thus I was forced to absorb those two other nations to get domination.

I learned my lesson - think twice before forcing capitulation. While capitulation early in the war can be good especially in late game (I once had Churchill capitulate after taking two small cities off his 15-city empire!), it is often preferrable to batter them into real submission first. Once yours, though, I tend to treat them nicely, help them with some technologies and world maps and such.

Don't know if its a good idea, but I agree with this.. I will generally give my vassels a Unit technology (assembly line, rifleing, guilds, civil service/machinery, etc.), force them to revolt into theology (or vassel), donate some :gold: and tell them to attack an enemy (or soon to be enemy) city as far away from my stack of doom that will just bulldoze through his civ (as units more than likely will be moved to the city my vassel is attacking and not the one I'm about to ambush). Add one more to the vassel collection.....repeat....rinse.

All this donating helps relations, even attacking a civ one of your vassels likes, keeps relations good.

I don't know why it wouldn't be a good idea. After all, well developed vassals are stronger allies. If you keep their land safe from enemy invaders and don't lose your own territory (both are quite easy) they won't leave you. And I seldom request vassal tribute, because I often have resources to spare for trading, in case the AI has some resource I need. I don't give financial support mostly, but OB, world maps, extra resources and some of my lower-tier techs are my favorite presents and the vassal likes them too. I think the AI should think of OB with their master as a gift instead of a trade, as the master can traverse their territory anyway (international trade is a mutual benefir though).

This all comes down to pleased/friendly vassal AIs in the end, if it makes any difference.

I agree that even though they are your vassal, they should be able to contribute in some way. Gifting them some military techs is beneficial, because if you beat them down enough they won't break free so they make better military allies.

Pleased/friendly vassals don't mean anything. A vassal (in 3.19 that is) will always be willing to trade with you, from furious to friendly. So a vassal at a higher disposition means nothing, nor is it beneficial in any way.

I don't know this for sure, just by my experience, but I did notice an advantage of pleased+ vassals. Whe demanding resourses, instead of a "Refusal means war" demand, in wich you can risk losing the vassal and going to war with him, you have a "could spare this for a friend" request, and as far as I have experienced, they never refuse.

But I love to see them smile!
