So i crush mongolia out of modern eastern europe and send them packing to far west russia where live some French immigrants too :D.....i say i will leave you their in peace if you offer capulation which with one city left they did

however now i cannot cancel this deal and also it says this.....

wtffff.jpg

how is this correct? surely he didnt offer me to be under his control, he offered to be under my control but i cannot break this deal..

also he claims to be doing fine by himself...

You need to wait a certain amount of turns before you can cancel the deal. I'm not sure how many, but I would guess 10-20.

The manual says that for peaceful vassalages the master cannot break them, only the vassal can after 10 turns. Then under the capitulation section it says "capitulation has the same effects as peaceful vassalage, but it cannot be broken by the vassal state even after 10 turns, unless ...." I took this to mean that the master also cannot cancel a capitulation vassalage, although it's not explicitly stated. I haven't been a master yet in a capitulation vassalage though, so I don't know...

Manual also states master can demand resources from the minor party even if they only have 1. If the minor party refuses a war is declared between the two parties...

Might be helpful if thats whats your trying to do...
You could even use your own worker to improve his terain to give him resource you can demand etc

There is a simple way to break off a vassal who only has one city...

:ar15:

But this does raise some questions:
- If peaceful vassalages cannot be broken by the master, and
- capitulation has the same effects as peaceful vassalage

How in the world would you ever get a vassal outside one of these two conditions? Either you offer them vassalage during peace, or its a capitulation during war. So basically the master can never break the vassalage except by going to war with the vassal state?

The manual also says that a master and his vassal are prevented from attacking eachother. I think Swampie has the only way of trying to break the vassalage as the master.

I think the reason they don't allow the master to cancel the vassalage is to prevent you from exploiting the vassal. You're supposed to "protect and promote the vassal's welfare" according to the manual. So it wouldn't really be fair if you could just use capitulation as a cease-fire just to heal your armies and regroup before declaring war on them again.

i dont even get difference between a vassal state and capulation, lol all to much for me!

i just wish i could wipe the floor with em!

its been around 1000+ years they have been under my control

i dont get why is says on their own still though, seems firaxis let the tortoise go here.

I had a slightly different issue with Vassal states. Germany declared war on me (Persia) and I did a fine job of taking their cities. They capitulated to me becoming my vassal, but every time I TRADE things to them for gold per turn their available gold goes up, allowing me to keep doing it for more and more GPT from them.

If they capitulate to you cannot break the pact and neither can your vassal, unless some conditions are met, such as they have the equivalent of 50% landmass and pop as the master, or they loose 50% of there landmass. Then they can get out. Once they voluntarly become your vassal I think they can only break that relationship peacefully. But there is one way to break this vassal deal if a civ has capitulated to you. Demand a tribute from them, all their techs, gold, resources, and if they refuse it is automatic state of war between you 2.

Except this doesn't happen, (see Jimbob27's thread in this section). It says it should, but it doesn't seem to work, Mansa Munsa has refused to give me stuff, and it hasn't resulted in war, just a very long pause from my computer (like trading world maps for the 1st time on huge map), and then me getting yet another minus diplo penalty with him..

@Barak: I've noticed this too, but just assumed the vassal was adjusting it's tech slider to give it more gold, but maybe there's a bug there too....

Only Resources Refusal results in a war, so just keep demanding resources from them, either they will get fed up with it and leave, or you will get some extra resources to sell

Another option is to declare war on someone near them and wait for that person to take your Vassal's cities, and then hit both of them.

I was playing as the mongols and went to war versus the celts and brought spain into the conflict with me. After a few turns Isabella asked to be my vassal. I obliged her (we were of the same religon at the time). After the war I switched to free religon and she poped up saying that the vassal deal was something they were not interested in anymore and what was I going to do about it. The choices I was given was to either peacefully accept the breaking of the pact or go to war. I let her go but then invaded later.
