Weird problem with old hardware

I assembled a junk computer from any old parts I could find.

Specs:
P2 233MHz
MSI 6111
448 MB SDRAM
8.9 GB HD
CDR Drive
GF2 MX
etc.

It all works perfectly ecxept one thing

The processor runs @ 133MHz
I find it quite odd because the motherboard supports only 66MHz fsb and the processor itself has locked clock multiplier so such speed shouldn't be even possible :confused:
 
Oh-kay so nobody knows how to solve this. My coclusion is that the old mobo has lost its marbles. Maybe something wrong in the clock circuitry perhaps ?
 
I'm not sure (not my forte), but to me, it doesn't seem like an odd thing to occur. Is FSB speed related to processor speed in such a way? (or if it is related to the FSB, is that where the multiplier comes in? ie a multiplier of 12.5 on a 166MHz making it 2075 - as mine is). As you can see I have little idea of what i'm on about, but if yours works, don't question it, accept that it runs faster than you expected :) if you think it is going too fast, might want to just keep an eye on the temperatures. :)

the processor is only running at 133mhz, but it's supposed to be 233mhz.

Underclocking was the only thing that sprang to my mind... :(
 
These are given as the CPU speed jumper settings for the MSI 6111 mobo, according to a quick search:
Speed... JBF1/1. JBF1/2. JBF1/3. JBF1/4.

200MHz On....... Off....... On....... On

233MHz On....... Off....... Off....... On

266MHz Off....... On....... On....... On

300MHz Off....... On....... Off....... On

333MHz Off....... Off....... On....... On

Perhaps one of your RAM chips is rated for a lower speed than the other RAM chips, assuming you have multiple chips because I've never seen a chip with 448Mb on it.

FSB runs as fast (or slow for that matter) as the slowest chip. So if I had a mobo supporting a 133 Mhz FSB and I had a 66 Mhz RAM chip, FSB would run at 66 Mhz. Your mobo can probably run the processor at full speed so check your chips and pull out the slowest one.

that's what i thought too, but the wording in the first post made it sound like it was going too fast.
(eg such speed shouldn't even be possible)

Could it be that the processor has it's multiplier warped somehow.

Let's see 133MHz with 66MHz fsb would give us multiplier of 2.

233 with 66 would be 3,5.

I'll have to do some testing.. I'll be rihgt back.
 
I set it to 200MHz I got 166MHz. When I set it back to 233MHz I got surprisingly not 133MHz but 233MHz so it now works jus as it should. When set to 266MHz however I got 133MHz again.

This mobo has not seen action in 3 years so could there have been bad contacts in the jumper block?
