what about espionage

I haven't read everything about features in Civ4; I was wondering what they planned for espionage; whether there would be actual spy/diplomat units, or just a screen like in Civ3

There is a new spy unit, but I dont know what its general role
is in the game though.

I'm kind of hoping for a spy unit rather than the screen menu myself. I'd be using it as a recon unit in anticipation of potential hostilities from bordering AI.

How the spy unit wil work? do you have to send it to each city to do missions like investigate or sabotage .. etc . If so it will take so long for your spy to complete a mission because he has to march to the target city , and if we suppose that a spy unit will have 1 or 2 movement points it will take something like 20 turns to reach a far city. That makes espionage useless because most of the time you need an espionage mission for something urgent (like sabotage production of a spacecraft part to catch up with space race)

I like the idea of a spy unit added to the game, also I would like to see things like U2-spy planes and Satilites later on in the game. As to how long a spy unit could take to move, thier should be ways of hurry their movements, like being dropped out of a plane behind enemies lines or hitch a ride on a Submarine. Early units might have to ride a horse to atleast the enemies border's, or maybe the horse and the unit are stealthy making it much faster to get to the city of iterest.

Well, I for one hope that its not entirely Unit-based, because this seems to defeat the purpose of removing Micromanagement in other areas of the game (i.e. why remove MM in pollution/corruption, when you are simply gonna add it to the espionage part of the game?) As it will definitely have a unit component, I just hope it will be a 'plant spy' in a city, then that spy operates off its own back until such time as you 'recall' it or it gets exposed. I think that would work OK. Anyway, only time will tell I guess!!

Whatever form espionage takes my big hope is that we have access to more information on our “neighbours” to make informed tactical and strategic decisions, and perhaps a better way of displaying it (dossiers). I have never been truly happy with past espionage options as I never felt as if the Civ world (I, II and III) properly reflected the real world in terms of how espionage/counter-espionage was practiced.

Actually, GeneralX, this brings me to another important information in regards to espionage. I feel the whole espionage system would be a HECK of a lot more important if you had free info about other civs. i.e. in order to learn anything important about a civ, you must either have an embassy or a spy planted. In fact, even an embassy should only give you some 'global' info about a civ, but nothing about individual cities (unless you are in some kind of alliance). Learning about specific cities-outside of alliances-should require the planting of a spy.
It occurs to me that I am rambling a bit, but I hope the gist of my idea makes sense.
