What am I doing wrong?

Been playing Civ since Civ II and have played over 1000 hours on Civ V since Steam has been tracking my play. I have only just added BNW and played a couple of games. But I am close to trying to go back to GaK if I can figure out how to do that cause the new changes have made the game so boring.

I spend most of the game now trying to balance gold and happy faces making it more of a sim game than a stratedy game. In the last game I played, I had gotten to gunpowder and have not had a single war yet. Everybody is just getting along and doing their own thing. I enjoy the trade routes part.. but that just doesn't make up for a bit of war to spice things up.

I usually wait for other countries to attack me in the early game but that isn't working with this mod. If I start attacking , then I get the warmongering crap and won't have any friends early on.

Any ideas on how to get some more action going on?
thanks

You can play with lots of war mongers. A game with Khan, Shaka, and other war monger AI will make for a much more interesting game.

Yeah, that might make it more fun.. haven't ever picked the AI players before... thanks

You can still engage in early DOWs. Just don't seize cities unless your opponent has a sprawling empire and/or is hated by the world. Feel free to take all of the civilian units you can handle, pillage, prevent your opponents from settling, etc. Just be careful with the cities.

So it's not the declaration of war that incurs such wrath, but just the taking of cities? I was wondering why I was called a warmonger when it was always me that was attacked? Normally I would just defend until their forces were destroyed and then attacked to take a couple of cities before getting another city in the peace treaty. Hmm... that will take some getting used to. Thanks

DOWs get you some warmonger hate, but it's pretty minor, and it tends to degrade fairly rapidly. Yes, seizing cities is the biggie, particularly if your opponent has few cities. However, it's my understanding that taking cities in a peace treaty is AOK.

I've made a habit of attacking one of my neighbors early in the game to cripple them and open up room for settling. It's working pretty well so far. As long as I don't take any cities, the only civ who seems to be bothered is the civ that I've attacked. Even that civ will usually forgive me relatively quickly.

This is insane, I was just contemplating starting a thread with the exact same title, saying exactly the same thing. I just got BNW as well and I tried three games on different maps (king, standard speed, standard size) and I quit all three about 140 turns into it because there is literally no conflict in the game. Not between other civs, not between me and other civs. Everyone is friendly as can be and we're all living happily together, sending caravans back and forth and making resource deals. And worst of all, it makes sense because there is very little reason to go to war. In all three games there are still plots of good land that haven't been settled and if I did force a war, I wouldn't have enough global happiness to make use of any captured cities. It's so, so dull.

Most civs are peacemongers who won't declare war unless they don't like you. Shaka, Montezuma and Gengis Khan, among other few, will always attack you one day or the other. If you want to piss off peaceful civs to the point of war, there are lots of options:
  • Steal their techs with spies;
  • Spread your religion to their lands when they already have theirs;
  • Expand quickly and nearby them;
  • Any above: when asked to stop, tell them to stuff it;
  • Declare friendship to their enemies;
  • Build a lot of wonders;
  • Ask tribute from city-states under their protection;
  • If all else fails: conquer two city-states or annihilate any civ, have the whole world declaring war on you simultaneously.

I'm not interested in getting the whole world attacking me... that is just as bad as everyone being peaceful. But as Blueberrymuffin says, it gets boring when all are nice and trading is all you do after exploring all you can. It is just build and balance money and happy faces.

In previous versions and older civ's , there was some action and wars going on that you could either ignore or use to your advantage. And in reality, there has always been a couple of wars going since the beginning of time. They either need a patch to fix this or some way for me to be able to go back to Gods and Kings. Using steam, I have no idea how to go back a version.

Just started a game with me picking all the warmongering civs in it, so we will see if that helps.

And thanks Blueberry for speaking up and letting me know I'm not alone

add Shaka\Attila\Zuma as civ, play on Immortal\Deity, reroll until they are your closest neighbors. There you have it, they will attack 100% when there's no more room to expend. :D

What are your usual settings/level? I play mostly on King and while some games could definitely use more conflicts, in most BNW games I play there's always 2 civs at war at any given time. After Ideologies come into play, it's often a fiesta of denouncements and wars.

I've had several games where one, two or three civs conquered a lot. Casimir holding 9 out of 13 capitals when he reached Modern and stuff like that.

It's common that my game started with 12-14 civs end with only 4-6 remaining, and I play mostly peacefully so it's largely the AI's doing.

Deliberately add some warmongers, try new Civs, maybe even bump up a difficulty. Try some new strategies, as well.

You can disable any DLC you want through the in game menu system, I don't recall exactly what its called, but its near the bottom of the menu when you first open the game up. You click on it and it shows all the DLC you have installed, and you can select/deselect any combination of them, so deselect BNW and you're all set!

I did it all the time, running a vanilla, G&K, and BNW version of my mods.

EDIT: ahh, the menu is titled "DLC" :)
