I am playing Civ1 DOS. What am I missing if I select IBM music - which on my computer gives me no music but faster game play?

If I select #4 (Sound blaster) I get some very slow plodding music (not off pitch, though) for the opening, for selecting my civ, for meeting leaders, maybe when a discovery is made. Oh yes, and a little scratching sound when barbarians get me. And sounds of doom when someone else discovers something.

Do you all get more music? If so, at what point in the game? Is it slow? Plodding?

I hate playing with no sound. It is a lonely world! I can stand the slow game play if I am getting the right sounds and music, but I am not sure I am.

What kind of sounds and music do you all get?

Your plodding music is an effect of the slow playing. When this plays at full speed it's really good, far better than IBM sound. Introduction sounds, discovery sounds, game start sounds, build sounds and combat sounds are superb considering it's 1991 vintage.

Having just dug out my old copy of Civ, I'm also finding this problem, and I'd love to find out the answer as well. I have VDMSound, which I'm using - as I do with all my old DOS games when using WinXP - as it's the easiest way of trying to get interrupts and things to work.

Anyone have any ideas?
