Believe it or not, there are still some new players discovering SMAC, such as myself. I played the Hive until I could beat the AI with some consistency on Thinker, but have yet to win on Transcend. Now I'm going back and checking out some of the other factions. (I always like to be able to handle a variety of factions/races/civs in my games). Currently, I've got a game going as the Morganites which is going pretty well. I also tried out the Gaians recently. I always play with all victory conditions enabled, but they almost invariably end as conquest victories. . . . go figure.
I play 99% of my SMAX time on smaller map size.
On bigger maps i have no fun with the amount of colonies to manage/attack/defend , there are already enough on a small map land and sea to get me busy for hours

Yeah, I didn't really enjoy my last game, which was a huge map. 3 civs were destroyed by Brother Lal and The Hive rather quickly and they were both on the other side of the map. So 95% of the game was just improving terrain and fighting off the stray mindworm.
I think I'll probably stick to smaller maps from now on.
