I was playing as the Balseraphs the other day, and I realized that I never have a strategy for their worldspell. I always think "Oh, I'll use it after I get this, or do that" but it seems pretty ad-hoc. What are your criteria for Revelrey? When is a good time for a Golden Age? What about the other worldspells?

Golden ages are best used when you aren't Spiritual and want to change religion and many civics in a short time.

The Illians and the Calabims world spell are best used early.

For the Calabims, grow to 3, use the spell, and you'll hit pop 5 (which is usually the limit that early) and everybody else will be at 1 (depending on difficulty and civilization, they might be at 2).

For the Illians I would scout the area, to see if I wanted to rush someone, then trigger the static if I did. But at least grow to 2, you can keep the enemy's capital. Alternatively trigger it when you build Samhain, frostlings everywhere and no building is evil.

The Malakim world spell is best used after you have expanded and settled in a religion. Obviously. You can REX and then use this spell to take out the nearest foe. Pretty much the same with the Doviello spell.

So I just looked up what golden ages actually do - any tile that produces at least one hammer or commerce produces one more. Did FfH change this at all, or is this (and no anarchy) all there is?

If this is unchanged, then a golden age has almost no effect on a specialist economy, right? And it would have a huge effect on an elven cottagespam economy? That seems odd, since you'll have a lot more GPs with a specialist econ.

Golden Ages gives you:

  • An extra commerce on commerce producing tiles
  • An extra hammer on hammer producing tiles
  • No anarchy
  • 100% more Great Person production

AFAIK completely unchanged.

And that last part means it will have a huge impact on SE. But the main part remains the no anarchy.

I usually use Revelry when I'm shooting for a tech like Iron Working, Sorcery, or Deception. Usually just when I get impatient for a big tech. I always wait until I have all my cottages and mines built, and ideally have a GPP city running.

I find it good to use when you have just conquered a rather large neighbour who has nicely improved his land for you. When the civil unrest finishes and the citites are fully under your control, cast Revelry and build markets/courthouses/monuments etc while being able to pay for the increased maintenance in the meantime.

Although I do think the main strength of Revelry is its ability to help in numerous situations, be sure to do it once stasis has been cast or the illians arent in the game. Stasis is the worst enemy of the Balseraph world spell.

I find its good when you've just started those cottages to grow, to make them doubly effective.

Although in general its good as a tech/production lead in to some super strat. As in, you go into the golden age thinking "I need x as soon as possible."

I pop it when I can make the best advantage of the production/GP bonus, usually when I have several wonders to build.
