Ok, here's the story. I was the Mayan with a fairly ok military, but I was a bit late with my tech. Now, there is this Babylon neighbour who has more powerful militarily than me, is more advanced with techs and rich. My military was weaker than him, but it would be no problem fighting a defensive war against them. After all, he cant send his entire army at once since it was only the beginning of medieval age, so no railroads. So, here is what I did. I put my research and luxury at 0% so that I have the maximum +wealth per turn. I asked a deal with babylon, offered the maximum gold per turn and asked him for ask much tech/lump sum as I could. After the deal, I immediately declared war and restored my research and luxury. After a few turns of defensive war, he finally accepted a peace treaty. I got like so much from this.

You can do that once but then your reputation with them is forever ruined. Better make sure the advantage will last to the end of game...

Are you sure, because I think that when you enter a peace deal your reputation is not considered(just as when you renegotiate peace). Your reputation will be ruined regarding regular trades though.

Note that this tactic is considered exploitative by most of the more restrictive rulesets (Realms Beyond Civilization or the LK series of succession games for example).

Hmm, I didnt know there was something called reputation. In this game, I'm a warmongering nation, so I'll make everyone furious anyway.

Reputation and attitude are different things. Reputation has to do with per-turn deals, and attitude has to do with how willing the AI is to be ripped off by you.

Furious is just attitude, which is not reputation. You can be a complete warmonger without ever doing harm to your rep. If your rep is ruined (which it is) you will never again be able to put anything that lasts more than one turn on your side of the trading table in normal diplomacy with an AI.

EDIT: Or, in more direct answer to your question, yes, the AI CAN be that stupid, but not more than once/game. Of course, this means that this exploit can often be put to good use at the end of a game (especially if doing it allows you to win the game).

I see. Then is my reputation ruined forever or they will "forgive" me after a few turns hehehe?

Ruined forever.

This happened to me in Rise of Rome for calling peace and breaking a deal
as Carthage to get 2 techs from Persia. :mischief: My alliance was with
Macedonia and they did not forget the REST of the game  .

...but not if you just happened to notice that the AI had a MPP with another AI, then you just happened to attack the second AI... :mischief:

This tactic is strictly prohibited in the SG community. You shouldn't play the game this way.

?????

I've had the AI do it to me, within two or three turns. ANd what is SG?

Yep it is prohibited in SG, but i think it is allowed in GOTM...
Plus, many players have their own codes of honor.

There are many tricks you can do against stupid AIs...

One of the most popular ones - RoP rape.

You make RoP deal with AI then deliver stacks of troops to each and every of AI cities and then attack. This will help you to destroy an entire AI civ in one or 2 turns.
Again, it is prohibited in SG but allowed in GOTMs and SGOTMs.
Of course that ruins your rep, but what you can do is to make Rop with every AIs on continent and then hope that 20 turns will be enough to rape each and every AI with the method mentioned above. That is certainly doable if you have Cavalry or/and railroads.

This is called a raw deal, it can also be done to a human opponent the same way. So you can do this, but the effects of it afterwards can cost you the game, especially at higher levels. You will lose rep, attitudes will become bad and hard to improve. This creates an uneasy situation that can last an extremely long time, which leads to off and on wars. Chances are the Babylon neighbor of yours will get back ahead in techs again, then you won't be able to make a deal. With the uneasy attitude and bad rep, war could break out again and you may end up losing alot especially as the game goes on. It will be harder to make peace as well and get MPP, RoP or other deals from many other nations. Its part of the game though and you can do it. The AI has given me ripp off deals many of times and I was so desperate I had to accept. Bottom line, you just have to decide if what you get from them is worth it, sometimes it might be but other times it will end up costing you.
