I like the WWII scenario that came on my copy of Civ 2. I dont know if every copy has the same scenarios, mine has two Rome & WWII (also seems to be 6 maps on the disc too).

Anyway, the version i refer to has a map of Europe, the tip of N.Africa, and has the eastern coast line of the USA. It always starts with the Axis forces attacking Paris.

-------------------------

I started trying to play the underdog recently. As a result of learning resource management on these very forums. So i thought i would try to play as the NEUTRALS.

Below is my most succesfull strategy so far;

AMSTERDAM always, always falls to the Axis at the start of the game. So i lose nearly all of the gold from the treasury at the start.

So the first thing i do is agree to a cease fire with the AXIS. I then ally myself with ALL other nations. I refuse to declare war on anyone, or give cash, but always share (or give knowledge). And frequently reuqest gifts.

The Axis do agree to peace, but always sneak attack BELGRADE (I have 3 partisan units from AMSTERDAM there as soon as i can, and try to get a couple of freights out, before the AXIS declare wasr again) the Alliance usually results in total war for the Axis, and keeps them off my back for a while.

Belgrade, I build barracks, 1 fighter, factory and dips. My main defence being to bribe enemy units, and pick softer targets off with my fighter.

Then Stockholm and Tehran i get to build engineer (1) and factory in that order. then just capitlaise.

The best result i have so far, is survive the game with Stockholm and Tehran intact, Stocklholm celebrating Empereor day, and Belrgade still standing, (just).

I am sure that other people can do much better. And welcome any suggestions.

Oh, dont laugh, but i was playing at Chieftan level.

Cheers,
thx.

I often play WW2 -scenario in Neutrals as Turks, because it's sicken' tired to all
the time move so much units. But anyway, I have got the same result in Warlord
(Except I made 15 cities between Caspian-Sea and Lake Aral

So how do you manage that?

I always feel too 'restrained' i cant get going.

Should i just try and build engineers, and keep building new cities from Tehran?

i like trying to hold on as the french or be the turks and invade the ukraine.

I have had more success by doing this;

Ignore BELGRADE, let it slide. Sell of its assets, turn by turn. Fortify all partisans from AMSTERDAM, and when BELGRADE falls fortify those ones too.

Relying heavily on diplomacy, I can get it so that my units are returend to their nearest cities which are by now TEHRAN & STOCKHOLM. And then managed to build 4 new cities, partisan uints ready to defednt them. At the end of the game i had the highest income.

The most annoying problem, is that I cant develop any sciences, so I cant build SPIES.

Though I always did like to play the underdogs, as it were, in various scenarios or even normal games, I do admit to seldom ending up well in those attempts. I nearly always play my scenarios on deity level to get a more "realistic" feeling to them ( hardly a foolproof method I might add ). And when on Deity level alliances are nigh impossible to maintain unless you really, truly do everything your ally tells you, and the big mighty Russians in WW2 don't give a bumblin' horsehockey if your pathetic little Turkish ( in the scenario mind you people, I'm not sprouting anti-turkish propaganda... ) nation won't last five months against the entirety of the Axis war machine or some such.

But still, I *have* occasionally managed to do well as the small guys. More often than not though I just barely survive some minor misstep... Ooor I can of course end up dead, which also happens occasionally

Cheers!

I've played as the Turks and usually hold on pretty well by taking out parts of the middle east along the coasts. I usually run into trouble though when the axis break our alliance and ally with the allied forced which is incredibly annoying if I may add.

Does any one here try playing as the spanish
I have tried a couple of times I build cities in north africa and up in iceland and send out lots of freight for money and keep research as high as possible

I hate playing the underdog as it often takes away themore fun parts of the scenario

I have played as everyone in the scenario. I played best with the Axis where it was only me and the Russians alone in the end.

Also, when I played as the neutrals I made a big mess. I kept Belgrade, Stockholm and Tehran but didn't make any progress but I hadn't thought out a good strategy.:(

The Spainish was jus boring. I jus had to wait and wait for nothing to happen.

The Allies were good but I was about to capture Berlin when suddenly a tank killed off a stack of troups ready to invade!!

The Turks was jus like the spainish, dull.

The French was a problem because of slow production.

The Russians were good fun but it is difficult trying to invade Germany. Maybe next time I'll use a better strategy.

No fun parts of the game just because you're playing as Neutrals? Not necessarily. When I play as the 'underdog' I make myself muck in as one of the major powers. I ally with or declare war on other Civs as normal. I sometimes like to see the Neutrals conquer Europe for a change. :goodjob:

There was a big to-do over at Apolyton this year about this very topic! We had challenges starting as the Spanish, French, Turks, and as the Neutrals. The best results (on deity) were complete conquest by 1962 or so, with the Neutrals best a few years later. (Sadly, my best was several years after that... :( )

The Neutral strategy that was most successful was to make Tehran and Stockholm burst with improvements while licking everybody's boot - doing anything to keep peace with the big 3 while catching up in tech (many received as gifts for the spit-shined boots). Also, an airport in each allowed huge trade/beaker bonuses for freight delivery. As soon as robotics was found, the invasion of england followed. This provided a base from which to make scores of bad guys for the mainland invasion.

If anybody is interested in reading the logs, the thread was titled "Arriba! Spain wins WW2 Scenario" in the CivII Strategy forum. There was also one for the default Rome scenario - winning within 100 years, deity, no huts. The best time was about 42 years.

Best I managed as the underdogs was to ally with the axis and conquer France as the Spanish :)

I tried playing the turks and did well until the Russian,Allies,Axis alliance attacked me!
