XP SP2 DirectX misery

Hi All,

Apologies for yet another ATi whinge. I've followed all the instructions at the official support site, including installing the latest ATi drivers, doing an express install of the game and doing the unpacking Art0.FPK stuff. It still gives "Failed to initialize renderer".

The problem is with DirectX. Apparently there is a bug in the version of 9.0c that comes with SP2. When I go to install DX from the Civ4 CD, it immediately says "finished", without actually installing. The existing DX claims to be fully up-to-date, but it's not. (This is not helped by M$ having several versions all called 9.0c instead of 9.0d etc.)

I'm pretty sure that if I could get DirectX to install from the Civ4 CD it would work - does anyone know how to do this? I've seen a couple of threads on other forums about messing with dlls and/or install scripts, but none of them were very clear.

Sorry if this isn't very coherent, I don't know how else to explain it. Civ4 installs fine, but doesn't work. It doesn't matter which ATi drivers I use, or whether I do the Art0 unpack or not. I'm sure it's a DX problem, but I can't find a version of DirectX to install over the top. Windows update tells me that DirectX is up to date (which it is, if you just look at the version number ...).

Hope someone can help,

CC
P.S. Card is a PowerColor RadeOn 9600 Pro 256Mb, if that helps. System is Athlon XP3200+ in an Asus A7N8X Deluxe

Also have a Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB (of the Sapphire variety) ; the PAK fix sorted it for me. What probably helped I was I bought a new ( well, second-hand) computer just before buying CIV with virtually the same specs as yours, except my processor is an athlon 64 3200+, it only had a clean windows install on it when I bought it.

The sequence in which I installed is was windows install --> SP2 install -->
5.10 Catalyst driver install ---> Civ4 install with directX (renderer error) ---> pak fix --> working game.

Some people said that the latest graphics drivers needed to be installed after the civ directx install, don't know if that helps.

Hope you get the game running, it's great :).
