Historically, nations in control of wealth and power nearly ALWAYS come in the "Zone of Power" or the temperate regions of the Earth (by defination that is any area North of the Tropic of Cancer or South of the Tropic of Capricorn).
Has anybody ever had a successful Civ game with a starting location near the "equator" (i.e. jungle or desert)? Or is everybody like me and just remakes the map until their on a river by grassland with a few cows nearby.

i normally go with whatever i get, unless its totally horrible. like jungle or pure desert (when am not agri) there are a few occasions that i don't want a rough ride but an easy ride and i will restart a few times till i get an average or above start. mostly when i take an agri civ and i don't start near a river i would restart until i have a river. or if i havent got a nearby luxury

I started near Antarctica about 2000kms north and am doing great.

Yes, starting location means very much. If you are interested in reading a great book that deals with "Starting Locations" in history, read "Guns, Germs, and Steel". It is very interesting and has some thought provoking theories.

In my current game, I crawled out of a desert (Essentially), and in the late 1700's, I'm winning, with little to no hope that the other civs will beat me.

Then again, the first thing I did once I found I was in a desert and plains area was to take over someone with a large empire and good land before they got a chance to overpower me.
