The hilarious part of it is, though, I've never actually read 1984, Catcher in the Rye, Catch 22, and I've never even heard of Slaughterhouse 5 until it was mentioned in this thread. Basically it didn't even occur to me that it (the Hollow hills) wasn't considered a classic until nobody else in the thread gave a damn about it even after I repeatedly mentioned it.

I've already mentioned one, despite not even reading books (for the most part) from that time period. The Hollow Hills by Mary Stewart. I don't care if it's considered a 'classic' or not (who decides that anyway?) but it's a wonderful book that had lots of commercial success, and I'd say it's been remembered because I had to read it my senior year of high school and I really loved it.

Anyway not much of a doubt in mind that sexism is a thing in present time (particularly, sexism against women) but it's also hard for me to see it. When I was an english major I'm not exaggerating when I say I would estimate roughly 90% of the students were female. The reason the authors of the 'classics' are almost entirely heterosexual white men is because by definition the 'classics' means a long time ago, a time period in which only people from that group were given the opportunity, unlike today.
