Civs won't voluntary vassal if you're at war with someone and they aren't.
Voluntary vassaling is mostly about your army. Build a large and powerful army and watch the offers come in.
Playing as the Ak Koyunlu there's a +1 diplo for past events since Timur gave Diyabakir to them. But there's also a -2 for first impressions. Shouldn't Timur be happy with the Ak Koyunlu?
Later spawning civs can use Caste System as a valuable trade chip since earlier civs see it as a tech...
The authors' claims would address this problem and allow for actual naval invasions
and the improved naval pathfinding addresses the straights problem. But I'm no modder so I can't tell if that actually happens.
If other people don't come forward then I think you're just unlucky.
I haven't tried it but it's supposed to be fun.
IMO the Saint UHV could be changed to having to control Egypt by a certain date. The Crusaders always desired Egypt and their invasions led to the rise of both the Ayyubid and...
The Levant has very rich land. But since it is divided in half between PoA and KoJ there ends up being two mediocre AI civs. They also have to deal with the Fatamids and the powerful Zengid/Ayyubid spawns that are all directed to attack them. That's great and the Crusaders should have a hard...
You have two complaints.
1. It is in the Crusader's best interest to keep the Fatamids alive so that the Ayyubids/Mamluks don't spawn.
2. Ayyubids not spawning leads to an overpowered KoJ.
Your quoted solution does not solve Complaint #1. The Crusaders would still want the Fatamids to stay...
Even if the Ayyubids spawn more often the human Crusader player would still try to ensure that the Fatimids don't collapse. Why battle for Egypt when it'll just flip away from you?
Your solution doesn't solve your problem.
Persecuting a religion could cause all affiliated buildings to be removed.
The more buildings removed the more money you receive. Wonders could give you a lot of gold.
There's an improved naval AI somewhere around here.
Edit: Better BTS AI 1.01 http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=370312
AI plans out and reinforces naval invasions.
