King of the World #6: Huayna Capac

This game is extremely difficult to translate and make interesting online :)

In 130 A.D., Incan Axemen found a noble man of the jungle, living peacefully within his hut:

This woodsman, fleet of foot and pure of spirit, offered to aid the people of Inca in mapping out the terrain. He was torn apart by Barbarian Axemen within 50 years.

I founded Rio in 190 in order to claim the precious, precious gems:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-16.jpg

It'll never be a fantastic city, but it has some production potential.

Shortly thereafter, we finally got our first Great Person!

Civ4ScreenShot0002-18.jpg

He built an Academy in Sao Paolo. Gotta get as much as we can out of those cottages.

In 265, La Paz cost me an extra 22 gold in maintenance:

Civ4ScreenShot0003-13.jpg

All right. Maybe that city was a mistake.

We also finally founded Bogota:

Civ4ScreenShot0004-13.jpg

We still don't have the Terrace up and running there. That place has absolutely zero production. At least that'll block an Aztec city (I think).

As you can see, our Panama will be pretty darn choked if we build it at this point. We have good relations with Montezuma, so I think we'll just use his and wait on our own until we have the Civics and resources to rush a Theater and all that.

In 325, the inevitable happened:

Civ4ScreenShot0005-13.jpg

Ah, well, Roosevelt. It was a good run while it lasted, eh?

We also got Brasilia founded near the Iron:

Civ4ScreenShot0006-16.jpg

That was the last city I founded this round. There'll be another, final wave of expansion early in the next.

Turns out that the Mexican-American war wasn't a joke, either:

Civ4ScreenShot0007-14.jpg

Boston did indeed end up falling.

Finally, in 370, we got the precious, precious technology of Alphabet. It was time to backfill:

Civ4ScreenShot0009-14.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0011-7.jpg

Honestly, the cash is almost as important as the techs.

I say almost because Roosevelt came back with an offer that was just too good to refuse:

Civ4ScreenShot0012-10.jpg

Finally, something to lessen our Happiness problems! It's also good to get what we can from America while there's still an America to get stuff from.

Especially considering that after buttering Montezuma up with an (ahem) "gift" of Currency (extortion will apparently get Monty everywhere), we were invited to join the crusade:

Civ4ScreenShot0015-9.jpg

We didn't do anything, but nothing happened to us, either. Gotta love the phony war diplomacy bonus!

Civ4ScreenShot0016-9.jpg

No compensation, but even with Monarchy, we couldn't afford much war weariness.

In 655, only, oh, 200 turns (or 3000 years) too late, we were finally able to sanctify our alliance with the Aztecs:

Civ4ScreenShot0017-9.jpg

So, with that, I decided to check in with y'all.

Here's a look at the continent:

Civ4ScreenShot0019-9.jpg

As you can see, the Spawning Grounds have diminished significantly.

Power:

Civ4ScreenShot0020-9.jpg

We're no great shakes, but Monty still has Roosevelt to chew on for a while. And besides, we're his best bud.

Science:

Civ4ScreenShot0021-8.jpg

Construction would be nice, but nobody seems willing to share. Ah, well.

And military:

Civ4ScreenShot0022-8.jpg

Is that enough Workers?

So anyway, I figure we should get the northern coast blocked off just before the Eurotrash show up :)

We're currently Hindu, running Bureaucracy/Slavery, and researching Metal Casting. Organized Religion will be part of the next revolution, whenever that happens.

So how'm I doing? I know there's not much to say, but the rounds have to end sooner or later. I'm probably expanding too slowly. My natural inclination towards caution getting in the way again, I guess. My micromanagement probably sucks. Anything else I'm missing?

Oh, yeah, the save:

First off i think you need about 2-3 more with the 3rd wave of expansion coming up. Jungles are gonna be a pain until you can clear it off and get that nice grassland. Nice job with the CE, im sure Dave would be proud!:goodjob:

No compensation, but even with Monarchy, we couldn't afford much war weariness.

Just for the record, war weariness is based solely on your units dying/killing in enemy territory, and possibly by losing cities. Purely defensive wars or phony wars can last for millennia with no weariness on your side. Usually its best to stay in a phony war until peace breaks out, as you'll keep getting 'mutual struggle' points and avoid additional demerits when Monty asks for your help once your peace treaty ends. Only risk is if the victim vassalizes to a third party, in which case you'll find yourself in another war automatically, but that's not really possible here.

You're going to need more workers for the next wave.. tons of jungle that'll need clearing. I had about 18 or so going by the time I was finished clearing it, helped get things up and running much quicker. Other than that, lookin' good. :D

Grats on the new comp, lucky. I know the feeling for the long turn waits.. thats how I am right now. Usually stuck on standard sized maps if I want to play a semi-fast late-game. :(

Btw, have you decided on the victory condition you're going for? Space race'll be the easiest way, like your Monty game, but man its boring..

Regarding Workers: If you look real close, you can see that I've already got a head start at nibbling away at the edges of the jungle for our central, yellow city. Maybe going for Feudalism and dipping into Serfdom would be a reasonable alternative to building more Workers (which will become completely useless once they finish their tasks)?

Regarding the Economy: I'm used to my economy being a bit more robust than this (it feels like we're only now starting to gain momentum), but if y'all say I'm doing a good job, I guess I'm doing a good job.

Regarding War Weariness: You learn something new every day. I guess that's why I put these games online. No biggie. I'll just redeclare once the treaty runs out.

Regarding the Canal city: That's a damn fine point, Rolo. The Lima Settler will be on it!

Regarding São Paulo: Well, you're from Lisbon, so who am I to argue? Any idea how to get the accent mark in game?

Regarding the computer: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=277829

A little bit goofy, a little bit garish. But a whole lot of fun.

Get the COASTAL cities settled ASAP. NOT the inland ones. Also, I would advise you move the palace to Sao Paolo or another great city once a courthouse is finished in the designated city.

And by the way, modern era will be better on your computer by A LOT. My computer has 4 gb RAM but it does slow down sometimes.

I'd definitely make sure to get Monty up to friendly to avoid a war deceleration on you. Other than that, keep settling fast and furious.

Coastal first, inland second.

Good game so far, but compared to me you made some interesting city placement decisions. I normally settle Colombia and Suriname first, then work my way south. Nice to see how different strats work.

If there is ever a situation to adopt serfdom this is it, even if it's not that great a civic. It's a tough choice though since I know slavery can be useful too with so little production in the Amazon cities at first.

You're doing much better than I when I tried it a while back, inspired by your other games. It didn't occur to me to start from the bottom, instead I was hacking through jungle with nothing but the Chile strip to support the economy. Argentine is of course a lot easier to develop at first.

I don't agree with your tech trade using code of law, alphabet would be better one to trade away. keep code of law out of monty's hand as long as possible, so you can see his research and cities clearly.remember he is your teching partner and potential threat. bribe to stop the war immediately to prevent monty getting too powerful. u also need the americans so that monty will trade tech with u. the civs on the big continent will run away in tech if let the war continue.

Often HC finds himself being a vassal to Monty... is this from capitulation or peaceful lovefest?

You're still at +gpt at 50% science, I'ld build cities until I reach 0% and then cottage the economy back into shape. It will hurt at first, but you're at 655 AD, and those cottages will take a loooong time to mature. I wouldn't worry about Monty; shipping troops on galleys is rubbish, even if he does manage to get a city in South Am, I doubt he'll be able to wage a decent war. That said, running caste system for the GP farm isn't a bad idea; you'll be able to build that canal city, run an artist and when you capture that crab tile you can run another, at least securing the canal city until you totally out-tech monty.

All right. I'm gonna try to play the next round tomorrow. I'm gonna build Panama, and then finish ringing the coast. I assume I'll just play until the outside world contacts us. This seem reasonable?

I'll bet you its Louis who contacts you first.. :D Lookin' forward to tomorrow's post Neal, keep it up.

Though it's a tad harder without the Great Library, I'd advise you to get a proper Great Scientist pump up in two cities - you can later on revert those cities to cottage ones. With these guys you can 'easily' bulb philosophy, paper, education and *boink* liberalism. All you need is two (mostly) grassland cities in the middle of the jungle and lots of workers! Switch to caste system when needed. In the mean time, you can run your science slider a bit lower if needed for the gold and still expand like mad - win win. After you got the necessary brainiacs, you can demolish the farms and revert those cities to proper cottage cashcows.

.. but that's what I'd do to get a good momentum and window for expansion.

ps - and I hope it's Mansa Musa the conquistador that contacted you :P
