King of the World #6: Huayna Capac

Finished my shadow game last night (monarch, vanilla, normal speed) -- space race win in 1914. Frederick was closest behind -- had all 5 casings and 3 thrusters, but no other parts. Techs unlocked by Scientific Method were the turning point for the economy -- biology, communism, and physics->electricity make for rapid growth, and huge production and commerce from all of those lovely watermills (I used these more extensively than cottages). A golden age during spaceship production boosted empire-wide science output to nearly 3000 beakers per turn -- I'm sure this can be beaten, but it struck me as pretty impressive for a peaceful game (excepting barbs and phony wars -- I never got invaded or launched an invasion).

Edit: AndrewN, as Neal knows the map, and I'm playing vanilla, and different leaders are likely dominant, I see no need to put the comments in a spoiler. However, if you are making a different point -- that we should not be giving advice that has been "gameplay tested" from a shadow game -- you may be right. What does everybody think about this?

Ultimocrat, could you spoiler your last comment? We don't want Neal to read it.

I think you should wait and get a large tech lead on Monte be4 attacking. Cottage everywhere and when those cottages mature to nice commerce powerhouse towns then just beeline either Macemen, or if not then grenadiers. But Monty should be you main target. His core cities are in attacking distance, just take central america and Monty should be crippled. ( although american cities may become more important later on. )

Neal's production capacity, both in raw hammers and food for whipping, is very low overall. Expecially compared to Monty's. He probably won't be doing any serious military build-up until levees and universial sufferage.

Normally that would be the case, but this is an Earth18 game. I'm pretty sure Neal knows what to expect. :p

Indeed, he has said he would stop "pretending" he didn't know who was on the map and where the resources were. No need to spoiler that. The fact that he knows Freddie already indicates he's an advanced civ and a contender for the space race. Technically, he's beating Neal at it right now.

Although, I doubt Freddy has the Amazon Grassland under his control, not to mention an entire content thats mostly based around rivers. He may have a lead now, but that won't last long once all those juicy cottages are up and running with the appropriate civics.

Keep up the good work Neal, its lookin' good for the most part. I won't repeat what others said, they already pointed out the problems. :p

*gasp!* You mean Frederick's on this map? And he has the potential to be a player in world politics? The game is ruined! :)

Nah, say what you will. That's the advantage of playing this map- Nobody needs to censor themselves. And shadow games need even less discretion, since every game is different. The only thing I'd ask you all to spoiler would be information based on the current save- for instance, if Frederick had conquered France and Rome and vassalized Russia. And even then, given that this is largely an isolationist builder game, that knowledge isn't really going to change anything. Heck, I'm fine with these threads being a place to discuss the leaders on the map in general, with my game just being a common reference point.

I plan on playing the next round tonight or tomorrow. The new computer has pretty much eliminated my "meditation time" between turns, so I guess I've been a little too impulsive. I'll try to correct my mistakes.

Look forward to a technological trade-fest!

YAY trade fest! I always loved those.

Sorry, life got in the way. I'll play it tonight. Two questions: What would be better at this point... Bureaucracy with River City as the capitol or Free Speech with its beefed up Towns? And if the latter, is there any point to moving the Palace?

Bureaucracy/Freespeech at the river city imo. And yes, move the capital.

It's either Bureaucracy or Free Speech.

In any event, I would think that due to the sheer size of the empire, FS would win out. This way you don't have to build the palace in a low hammer city, and can just build the FP somewhere to reduce maintenance.

With several cottage cities, I think Free Speech wins out.

As for moving the palace to reduce distance maintenance, well, I've already cast my vote for state property watermills. But building the forbidden palace somewhere like Sao Paulo, Rio, or Brasilia makes sense -- there's a reasonable amount of time still before you'll have Communism ...

go Bureaucracy for now, production is key since you dont have much rite now. But when all those cottages in the amazon mature then Free Speech ftw!

Finally, the game has started. My goals were to profit from the international trade network and to overhaul our antiquated government. I feel that I've succeeded in both endeavors.

I began by changing Manaus' build to a Terrace:

Apparently a Courthouse is not, in fact, a prerequisite for a Palace, and with the possibility for Free Speech, a Palace move was no longer strictly necessary. Also, as you all had pointed out so vehemently (and correctly), the biggest problem with getting a Cottage City up and running is slow population growth. Hence, the Terrace. The Workers also started building Farms.

With the Printing Press developed by Johuayna Gutenpac in Lima, it was time for a Trading Montage! Cue bad '80s music:

Banks and Harbors were built across South America. The Harbors were mostly, at this point, preparatory for Astronomy (which I immediately started research on). With about half of our commerce going to Gold, though, the Banks were a big help. We also, obviously, made some research trades with our Astronomy-having friends, largely eliminating our health problems.

Other Civilizations began to trickle in (including, for those astute enough to read the Trades closely, Alexander, who is apparently no slouch in this game- for once). Who was the biggest surprise? Keep in mind, she found me:

Good for you, Isabella! Of course, this means it sucks to be Louis.

Sadly, not all contact is friendly. I ended up getting embroiled in fake wars against the isolated, Taoist Hatshepsut, the always lovely Isabella, and the curmudgeonly Frederick. I also had to spurn Qin Shi Huang's invitation to war with Montezuma.

With Astronomy in the bag, it was time for a few new trades:

And to start beelining Democracy. The trade of Economics to Monty was to try to dislodge him from Mercantilism and restore his juicy trade routes. No such luck. Ah, well.

One of our Incan Caravels, with a Scout on its deck, found (surprise, surprise) an isolated goody hut island in the South Pacific:

The Scout made peaceful contact, was led to the tribal chief, and was given.... a map. Of about 30 empty Ocean squares. Thanks for nothing. The Scout burned the village behind him.

Plato had been born in Buenos Aires in the mid-15th century. He didn't do much, though, just learning the Tango and hanging out at the Teatro Colon until 1500. Then, with the concepts of Democracy beginning to gel, Plato got off his tuckus, dusted off his drafts of The Republic, and started a Golden Age:

Why the wait? Why, to save us 3-4 turns of Anarchy during the inevitable Civics change, of course. Since Democracy was still more than five turns off, I got a head start by adopting Free Market immediately.

Shortly after that, I decided to let Spain off the hook for a few gold:

Civ4ScreenShot0016-11.jpg

Sadly, she wouldn't give up Paris ;)

With Democracy researched, I traded it to Saladin for Liberalism and a few gold (yeah, I overpaid, but I need Liberalism now), and made the Civics change:

I closed out the round with what I believe to be a favorable trade with the French Remnant:

So there we stand. Sadly, maps were not readily available. Only Saladin was willing to trade, and he wanted more than 500 gold! So we're still limited to our own continent.

Speaking of, here's a look:

Menaus has a Terrace and a Library. Without a Palace move, I think the Courthouse once again makes sense.

The Diplomatic situation:

Haven't met Tokugawa yet. He's just shy.

Techs:

We're ahead of most of the world. Qin's an absolute beast, though.

And, finally, the Domestic situation:

We can research Steam Power, Steel, Military Science, Military Tradition, Scientific Method, or, well, Theology. What should our research goal be?

Overall, I think we're where we want to be. Am I missing something?

Go steam power, im getting BtS in a matter of hours but i think steam power allows the levee rite? With all those river tiles at least some of your production problems should be eased.

Production seems to be your problem, so steam power. After that, biology might seem like a good thing to get if you're not going to run into happiness problems.

re: Steam Power- Good call, guys. That'll also be a monopoly tech, good for a bit of trading. Now that we're into Universal Suffrage, Commerce can (partially) make up for our low production, but, yeah. Levees will be huge.

re: Monty- Yeah, our jump to Free Religion bumped him down to Pleased, and our military isn't quite up to snuff (Brasilia has been pumping units, but that's about it). Still, though, he's got plenty of foreign opponents to "fight" with, and besides, he's not much of one for amphibious assault. I will do what I can to appease him, though.
