In this round, I decided to get a little impulsive.
Things started simply enough. I finished researching Machinery, and traded it off to Hattie:
And I discovered that Rome had found an alternate route to our lands:
Curse you, Cyrus. And he refused to join in the fun or even to close his borders. Ah, well. It was just a handful of Chariots and Praetorians. Nothing some basic reinforcements couldn't repel.
I want to thank everyone who told me to step on Tokugawa's throat. His last redoubt was not only in a great location that's always worth founding on this map, but it was lightly defended, to boot:
It fell easily and came with some useful infrastructure:
Tokugawa was captured and is currently confined to a 10' x 10' cell in Karakorum. Things haven't really changed for him, to tell you the truth. He doesn't trade with anyone, and he mumbles meaningless threats to anyone who comes to visit.
Mansa Musa showed up and, despite hating my guts, he offered me a juicy trade:
Good old Mansa.
In 655, Louis Pasteur showed up in Guangzhou:
He was blathering something about heating up milk or whatever. Somehow, that ended up translating to insights into Philosophy (a no-brainer use of a Great Scientist, in my opinion). I traded it and Machinery to Saladin for Civil Service and Literature (and a few gold to make up the difference).
My battles with Japan and my skirmishes with Rome also netted me a Great General. I quickly attached him to the Warrior guarding Karakorum and turned him into a City Raider:
You can also see there that I've moved my capitol. I went with Old Sarai. It's nice and central, and it's a production powerhouse.
Those brushfire wars with Rome apparently convinced Hattie to join in the fun. Thus, those Praetorians were suddenly needed on a front closer to Italy. Caesar was willing to pay for peace:
So I gave it to him.
No sooner did one war end, though, than I got roped into a pair of others:
How could I say no to two of my bestest friends? And I had a reasonably sized army set up, so I sent an expeditionary force westward through Persia and Russia. Worse came to worst, I'd get some pillaging gold out of it. And gold is at a premium in this game.
Of course, Frederick was the Pope, so if he didn't want to fight me, he didn't have to:
But that still made Greece easy pickings!
In fact, the turn peace was declared, Germany even came to me with a tech trade:
Now I need to get a Caravel out there. Oh, and I traded for Hattie's map.
Oh! And we have so many religions floating around in our empire that I thought that a midgame Priest Economy might be fun:
Or maybe that was just a waste of hammers. Either way.
Anyway, around the turn of the millenium my little band of merry marauders showed up in Greece, to find Sparta woefully underdefended. That Longbow would be trouble, but everything underneath was soft and juicy. I spent a few turns pummeling the walls and sent in my men:
Of course I'm not going to keep it. I figured I'd gift it to a worthy cause. Rome, Egypt, and Germany are all willing to take it off my hands. Frederick seems the best candidate, since the city is already 15% German. We haven't really seen eye to eye since that declaration of war, though. I think if I gave it to Rome or Egypt it would just culture flip in a few turns. What do you all think I should do?
So here's the map:
Rome filed a LOT of troops through northern Greece while I besieged Sparta, so I think Hattie may not be long for this world.
Here's the tech screen:
I REALLY want Guilds to upgrade my Keshiks to Knights, but the siren call of Liberalism has distracted me. Looks like I can always trade for it later.
Annnnd the Diplomacy screen:
The factions are pretty well laid out, now. So what should I do? Build up for a hit on Asoka and vassalize him? Start chipping away at Cyrus? Continue my mad adventures in Europe? Or stay the course, take Astronomy from Liberalism, and head out for the New World? And what should I do about Sparta?
Oh, and I'm waiting on a Great Person to grab a Golden Age for a civics change. I'm thinkin' Monarchy/Bureaucracy/Caste System/Free Religion.
The save:
