I have a saved game in a folder with new units and rules files, but only the original units are being displayed. There are no animations and I can't figure out why my files are n't getting recognized.

It's possible that color palette of your unit files is incompatible with what the game expects, I had a similar problem some time ago. Still, it's supposed to at least display grey triangles if that's the case.
