hello, this is my second story, my first real one because the first i sort of abandoned...anyway, i created a world war one scenario for civ 3 only a little bit different than others...there are no starting alliances and wars, except the Ottomans vs Arabia and Austrians vs Serbia. I am playing as the Germans and am trying to takeover Europe by conquering France and by getting other German flavored countries to rely on the fatherland's support. It starts in week 29, 1914, traditionally a week before the real start of ww1, although there are no alliiances so anything can happen. I'm going to write this as a political correspondant in a Berlin newspaper. Any kind of feedback is wanted.

Week 29, 1914
written by Mmm...Donuts

This week in politics could possibly be one of the most table-turning weeks in recorded history. Early this week the Kaiser met with Belgian king Albert to discuss a right of passage treaty and a mutual protection pact. The Kaiser has made public his plans to widen the German range of control by getting smaller German flavor states to rely on the fatherland for support. The Belgians accepted this treaty. The Swiss have also agreed to the same standards.

Now here is where the tables turned. With these right of passage and mutual protection treaties, the Kaiser deployed troops through Belgium and Switzerland into France, declaring war. The Kaiser's war plan, headed by the General Helmuth von Moltke, is to outflank the French border army from Flanders and the Swiss border, and close in on them to capture Nancy and Verdun and end the war within weeks.

More political development-Arabia and the Ottomans are at war as the Austrians and Serbs are. With three seperate wars in Europe, but different factions and growing tensions, there are major blueprints for a bloodletting. Toward the middle of the week, different countries engaged in diplomacy. The Germans and English have signed a mutual protection pact, also have the Greeks and Montenegro. Denmark and Serbia have signed an alliance agains the Dual Empire. The French and Bulgarians signed one against us Germans. The Serbs offered the Kaiser and alliance against Austria, but the Kaiser declined. More mutual protection pacts include Britain and Denmark, Italy and Norway, Italy and Germany, and Greece and the fatherland. Also the Austrians and Germans have signed a trade embargo against Serbia and the Arabs and French did so against Germany. With all of this, the Ottomans, Portuguese, Greeks, British, Swiss, Belgians, and Norweigans declare war on France.

The war has its first casualties as 3 German battleships and one crusier begin fighting with 2 French battleships and one cruiser off the coast of Belgium. The German navy emerges victorious, completely destroying the French fleet there.

A wrecked French ship floats in the English Channel.

But the French weren't completely lost. Their land army advanced into Belgium capturing the city of Ypres without a single death, and then into Antwerp. This makes the Belgians completely landlocked. The Kaiser however deployed many troops to defend the remaining Belgian cities.

These Belgian soldiers are survivors of Ypres and Antwerp. First they fought at Ypres, then at Antwerp, now they are living in holes outside of Ypres.

Just yesterday, the German Intelligence Agency (GIA) captured a Dutch spy here in Berlin. King William of the Netherlands claims that it was a mistake, and the Kaiser forgives, as the Dutch are somewhat Germans, he says.

This week in political news, the war widens with many more nations entering the fight. This week's news began where last week's left off--with the Dutch. The Netherlands and the Germans have signed a mutual protection pact, with the Dutch declaring war on France. Denmark, Serbia, Montenegro, and Russia also declare war on the pathetic French "empire" that has been battered down by the massive fight that took place in Champagne this week.

A humungous battle erupted this week in Champagne lasting the whole week. Fifteen German infantry and nine cavalry throughout Champagne, France, mostly in the north on the border with Belgium or the south with Switzerland began fighting with uncountable French troops. Five infantry and one cavalry division belonging to Germany have been destroyed along with nine total French divisions. The battle is indecisive, both sides having slight gains. The French severly weakened the German offensive army, but their army too was crushed and have retreated inward to its cities of Verdun and Nancy as German troops encircle them.

a scene after an ambush outside of Nancy.

an image of German cavalry charging near the border with France. All the men you see here are now in coffins.

these soldiers are heading from Metz to the front.

More on the constant alliances and mutual protection pacts. Arabia and Montenegro sign one, so do Bulgaria and Denmark, Russia and Norway, Spain and Albania, and Russia and Belgium. Netherlands and Serbia sign an alliance against Austria-Hungary as well as Arabia and Bulgaria sign an alliance against Germany. Spain and Bulgaria also sign a trade embargo against the fatherland.

Lastly in the news, the Germans and the English have again this week set aside their differences by signing a right of passage agreement to punish their common enemy, the French.

Another vicious week in the history of Europe. Political analists are calling this the biggest war ever. Already some 500,000 have been killed. This is mostly military fatalities, a total 80,000 German and 100,000 French so far, but many citizens of Belgium in Ypres and Antwerp, now under French control, have been killed. Keep in mind the fact that there are 10,000 men in a division of soldiers and already 40 divisions have been destroyed in Serbia, Champagne, Belgium, Arabia, and other fronts.

The biggest news this week is the fact that the English are humungous traitors! Lloyd George, prime minister of the cowardly English nation, declared war on us! The Kaiser claims we can handle the English, and we all know we can, but it will be a tough fight. Although our land army is almost double theirs, their navy is triple ours! They have at least two ships in every port. They have a navy spanning from Kuwait City in the Middle East, to Egypt, Gibraltar, Ireland, London, and to Scapa Flow in their northernmost reach. But we Germans have one thing they don't have-pride.

The Kaiser this week also drafted at least ten conscript divisions to replace the losses from Champagne. Most have been transfered to Verdun or Belgium.

A naval campaign has been initiated to bomb the French city of Caen. Three cruisers have been sent to blockade the city. It is said that some French civilians have been killed but major targets in the city, the coastal fortresses and the soldiers stationed there, have not been hit.

Again Caen is in the news later this week when the English navy strikes our cruisers from behind. Our cruisers heroically fought until the bitter end when they were sunk, sinking one British ship, but the British did unfortunately win-only to gain a position blockading the same city we did.

here is the Battle of Caen. On the left is the German cruiser Danzig 9.

The Danish also declared war on us, because of their mutual protection pact with the English. But it will be easy to destroy the puny peninsular nation...we already destroyed two divisions at Kiel.

A battle at Verdun starts this week when German troops assault the town from every side, and after sucessfully weakening its defenses, began to siege the town. The French counterattack was very weak...no German divisions were destroyed but three French ones were.

this is a scene where German troops are attacking a village outside Verdun. Most of the fighting here is German artillery bombing merchantships in the river.

The last battle this week is at Ypres. A combined German and Belgian army attacks the Belgian populated, French occupied city. Although it is a tactical defeat for us Germans, it is a strategic victory as we have weakened the town's defenses. Two French divisions, one Belgian, and one German have been wiped from the face of this earth.

A street in Ypres is bombed. At one point in the battle, Belgian troops were in the streets, but soon were forced back out by the French defenses.

Now for an update on the tangle of alliances and mutual protection treaties this week. For mutual protection pacts, its been just Spain and the Netherlands. In military alliances, its been Albania and Netherlands vs. Austria, Norway and Denmark vs. Austria, Italy and Bulgaria vs. Austria, and Rumania and Albania vs. the Ottomans. The Spanish and Arabs sign a trade embargo against the fatherland. And Sweden declares war on France, Spain does too.

This week opens when the Kaiser himself burnt a Serbian flag and mobilized four divisions against Serbia, declaring war against them, and signing an alliance and right of passage agreement with the Austrians. In return, Austria declared war on France.

German ships bombed Copenhagen this morning, casualties are unknown but the town's coastal fortress is in ruins.

The coastal fortresses and port of Copenhagen are heavily bombed by German ships.

The German navy began withdrawing from positions in the English Channel and blockading the waterway near London early on this week. Later this week, the English navy in the North Sea was moved to assault the blockade. The results are indecisive-three of our ships and four English have been sunk. And the blockade continues, so the Germans in terms of tactics have won, but strategically...no one is sure.

The Germans Intelligence Agency has planted a spy in Paris. This was top secret until the French discovered him. This shows though how we can manuever spies to the corners of Europe. Who really knows how many spies we have allover Europe? The general public may never know...

And another weekly update on alliances, mutual protection pacts, etc. Albania and Portugal sign an alliance against France and teh Russians and Norweigans against Austria. Portugal and Russia also sign an alliance against Austria. Rumania declares war on Bulgaria and Austria. The Ottomans, Belgians, and Norweigans, with German encouragment, declared war on England. The Belgians also declare war on Bulgaria. This week also two conscript German divisions and one flak engage in the first fight in the Balkans against one guerilla from Serbia. The guerilla division was supressed with no (recorded) German casualties.

Major news this week! Verdun falls! Germany triumphs as the French fortress-city of Verdun's defenses collapse. German forces advanced from every side into the city. With six German divisions stationed there, the city will never be under French rule again.

But as one battle ends, a new one begins. The Battle of Nancy begins when German troops begin shelling the city. So far no divisions have been destroyed but one French division is badly damaged.

The German government today announced a new project called The Panzer. It is going to be, they say, a car with a cannon at the end that can move quickly and its interior is guarded by heavy sheets of metal so it will be hard to destroy. Officials say it will resemble a tank. To supply for this project we will need a lot of oil, so Germany has given the Russians some 2000 tons of gold for oil.

This is a prototype of the panzer moving through a puddle outside of Weimar. It is undergoing many tests before it will be used in the field.

he blockade of London is destroyed when the English Channel Fleet destroyed our last destroyer there; after this more German ships allover the North Sea have been sunk. By today, our North Sea Fleet is completely obliterated. Most of our navy is now concentrated on Jutland and at bombing its cities.

In alliances and what-not this week, and in this order, Albania and Portugal sign an alliance against the Austrians, Montenegro and Arabia sign an embargo against us as well as the Greeks and the Danes, Montenegro and Norway sign an alliance against Austria. Albania and Bulgaria sign an alliance against Belgium. Greece and Albania sign an alliance against Belgium as well and Sweden and Belgium sign one against the British.

Our advisors were wrong-Verdun has been retaken... The fortress-city is retaken by the French at the quick, swift, and effective Verdun Offensive. The French reoccupied the city, destroying all six divisions garrisoning the town. Helmuth von Moltke was relieved of command for having "flaws in the city's defense" and Erich Ludendorff is his new replacement. Ludendorff promises to recapture Verdun and to take "Nancy and beyond."

After Verdun fell, a small force of French infantry divisions moved into our borders and assaulted Metz. Although they nearly destroyed two seperate divisions of ours, the offensive was crushed and the French are back to defending their own cities. The Kaiser promises that "this is the last of France's offensives into Germany ever."

Some Frenchmen try to advance into Metz but are gunned down. The city was unprepared for the attack but still managed to fend off the French.

Beside that, this week was just alliances. Sweden and Portugal sign a mutual protection pact and declare war on Austria, Sweden and Serbia sign a trade embargo against us, Montenegro and Denmark also sign a trade embargo against us, Montenegro and Norway declare war on the English, and Norway and Rumania declare war on the Ottomans.

More cities are absorbed by our nation! In two completely seperate and not scheduled offensives, one Danish city (Arhus) and one French city (Verdun) fall to the German armies.

The Battle of Arhus was a gamble, Paul von Hindenburg, commander of the forces in Denmark, employed panzers for the first time since their creation. The panzers were undefeated and before our infantry and marines got chances to attack they had moved into the city. Also some cruisers helped by bombing the city during the battle.

Here some panzers drive into Arhus.

The Second Battle of Verdun was even more unscheduled. It began as a defensive battle when a French force of two marines attacked a fort right east of Verdun. When the two marines died, Ludendorff was convinced the garrison at Verdun was low. So, he too sent in panzers (but not as many as Hindenburg did) and also some marines and flaks. The city quickly fell with barely any resistance.

And again alliances. Portugal and Serbia embargo us, same with the Swiss and the Arabs. The Ottomans and our people embargo Albania, but the Ottomans had to pay us 500 tons of gold before we made the announcement. Greece and England sign an alliance against the Italians, Switzerland and Russia against Austria, Denmark and Italy against Greece, Bulgaria and Greece against Italy, and Norway declares war on Greece and Denmark on Rumania. This war truly won't last long, because of total destruction adn the high cost, soon the French will have to give in, as well as other nations fighting. The Kaiser claims that by week 50 of this year the war will be over. But no one can say for sure.

NANCY FALLS! The German people celebrate as what was once the border with France is now just a line of two layers of German forts.

Truly the Battle of Nancy was an example of great German pride. In the beginning of the battle, six German divisions were destroyed, but without surrendering, Ludendorff ordered them to continue their thrust closer to the city. Defenses all around the town were knocked out and throughout the week our troops drew closer until we finally captured the city and liberated 20 gold from its vaults.

The Kaiser also announced that because of Nancy's fall, the French are severly weakened. He exclaimed "our men will be home before the snowflakes have fallen from the heavens!"

Piles of dead German, Belgian, and Swiss troops from the battle of Nancy. Even though the Germans were victorious, we suffered massive casualties.

The fog of war at its worst: soldiers are randomly fighting to protect their ground.

Also in the news, Albania and Arabia sign an embargo against us, Spain and Denmark too, Switzerland and the Ottomans sign an alliance against the English, Spain and Russia against Austria, Belgium declares war on the Danes and Switzerland does too.

Another victorious week for our nation. More towns are liberated to the German empire. Hindenburg again makes headlines with his heroic offensive against Esbjerg. The city was viciously taken after a total ten German divisions, almost all conscripts, were destroyed. With the last unit, a panzer, the town fell to German control. Hindenburg relocated his office to Esbjerg.

Victorious, General Hindenburg stands in his new office in Esbjerg, in what was once the Danish local Senate office.

And on the French front, the city of Besancon falls as well. A malicious panzer assault by four panzer divisions causes the city to fall. Now Paris is within short distance and the popular phrase "Push to Paris? No...Slowly walk and we can still take out those bastards" has arisen.

A panzer and some soldiers walk into Besancon, and "still take out those bastards."

Spain and Serbia sign an embargo against us, Denmark and Norway sign an alliance against Greece, Serbia and Norway sign an alliance against Greece, Italy and Rumania sign an alliance against the Ottomans, Albania and Russia sign an alliance against the English, Spain and Italy sign an alliance against the Bulgarians and Denmark declares war on the Ottomans.

And the first step towards peace again on this once propserous continent occured just today when the Kaiser made peace with Bulgaria, demanding no territory, gold, or anything else. The two nation's armies have never met in combat but were eventually going to down near Serbia, and hopefully this will set an example for other Europeans.

Two major stories this week, Chalons, France, is taken and also the United Nations is built in Koln, here in Germany, in hopes to end war and the Kaiser is elected as Secretary-General of this congression.

First about Chalons. Originally going to be an attack on Reims, Ludendorff and Helmuth von Moltke (now commander of panzers just in France and Belgium) cooperated to plan the attack. Panzers and marines poured into the city and pounded its eastern and northeastern defenses. Originally, Ludendorff planned to raze the city but Moltke told Ludendorff "its not their fault their French. Lousy, cowardly, bastard French. We should let them live, but as a final humiliation we will build panzers here and draft their men to our army."

Now about the United Nations. So far, the German Intelligence Agency, Military, and Trade Committee have spent a combined 10,500 tons of gold. Germany's treasury is now as low as 1,500 gold! So, in order to try and restore peace so we can regain our nation's money, the Kaiser erected the United Nations, a congression based from Koln, to try and have world peace. All European nations joined this congression except the French and English. The Kaiser ran against Czar Nicholas II of Russia for the position of Secretary-General, the overseer of the congression. Only the Russians, Spanish, and Serbs voted for the czar, all other nations voted for the Kaiser. With his new position he has no technical authority but can give advice to other nations at war and try to peacefully resolve crisis before they get big, like we've had this year.

The Kaiser has a "vision for peace," a Europe where tanks and guns are a vision of the past and all nations will compete economically intstead of militarily. However, the Kaiser says we must win this war first to "make the world safe for peace."

A picture of the United Nations hall in Koln, Germany.

Regardless of the United Nations, more alliances and treaties are made. The Bulgarians and Swedes declare war on the Ottomans. Rumania and Montenegro sign an alliance against the English. Portugal and Rumania sign an alliance against Denmark. Denmark and Bulgaria ally against Spain. Denmark also declares war on Italy.

Another week of victory for the Germans, the Danish capital and one more French city falls. Despite international criticism the Germans continue their invasion of France and Denmark.

Other nations of the world call the Kaiser "ironic" for his invasion of Denmark and France. His job now is not only to ensure the prosperity of the German people but also to try and push world peace. But the Kaiser remarks "I have two jobs, and I want not to conquer for my country but to conquer war for my planet, but it is still a problem. If I stop war with France and Denmark and other nations now, there will be peace for a while but another war will erupt within a few weeks, maybe a year or two. But I want to keep fighting a war to end all wars."

The attack at Reims was another brilliant panzer attack by Moltke. No German casualties were recorded but seven French casualties were.

And in Denmark, a naval landing force of three panzers under Barbarossa (a German general) moved in from the south of the island to take the city. Now the Danes only control the tip of Jutland and Iceland. The Danes are panicking and many are fleeing into Germany for safety.

And Russia and Portugal sign an alliance against the Danes, despite they will have nothing left after the Germans rip through Denmark, Montenegro and Denmark sign an alliance against the Ottomans, and Serbia and Russia sign another alliance against Denmark. Soon hopefully these alliances will die down and after twenty weeks, when alliances like these are officially called off unless renewed, peace can once again be seen on the horizon.

EXTRA EXTRA! Kaiser holds top-secret meeting with top commanders and politicians! Below i am writing live from their meeting here at the Reichstag! Here it starts now. After you're done reading this remember to burn it because if the enemies get their hands on it, we're doomed!

"Gentlemen, I have called you all here for a special purpose." says the Kaiser. Paul von Hindenburg, commander of the army in Denmark, Erich Ludendorff, overall commander of the army, General Barbarossa, commander of the 1st Army, all panzers, currently located in Copenhagen, and Helmuth von Moltke, commander of panzers in the west (France, Belgium) are all here.

"What's that purpose?" Hindenburg asks.

"Are we suing for peace? We cannot-we have plenty more men, give me the word and I'll draft another million!" Ludendorff exclaims.

"We're not going to have peace now, but we are wrapping up the war." the kaiser says.

"Go on..." Moltke is interested.

"My idea now is that we take Paris, I mean we are two squares [twenty miles] from the city of lights, i say we sieze it and the French will beg for peace. There we demand a humungous sum of their treasury, the cities of Antwerp and Ypres which we will give back to Belgium, Nice, Corsica, Tunis, Algeria, and Morocco, and we will keep all of those as colonies except Morocco we will give to Belgium for their troubles.

"Next, Barbarossa will land in Denmark and with Paul's help will sieze that last city in Jutland and sign peace with Denmark, now only holding Iceland, forcing them to give up all of their treasury and resources.

"Then we can focus on the remaining two fronts: The Balkans and Britain. We can transfer all of our troops from Denmark to Serbia in only three weeks. They can get us some cities there, I'm confident they can. Paul will be the new commander there. And Helmuth, we will relocate you to Tunisia where you will command the invasion of Egypt.

"Yes, you heard me, Egypt. Currently the land is an English colony. What we will do is first arm the colony: with control over the port of Nice, France, we will send panzers there to be transported to Tunisia. Once we have a huge force there, we will move them across Italy's colonies and into Egypt where we will assault Cairo. We will also get an alliance with the Otomans to come from the east and the two armies will meet at Alexandria for celebration over conquering Egypt.

"Then for conquering Arabia. Those bastards declare war on us but don't have the guts or men to face us in combat. So we'll come to their doorstep and completely ruin them. Every city we take we'll raze unless it has oil...I want to get independent from Russian oil which leads me to my next point.

"After Arabia, we will sign peace with England and transfer as many troops as possible to the border with Russia. We will get the Norweigans, Belgians, Austrians, Ottomans, Rumanians, and maybe Bulgarians in an alliance against the Russians. There I will put a new general in command. His name is Adolf Hitler, a young conservative colonel fighting over at Rheims. I sense some leadership qualities in him. Anyway, he's going to come from Konigsberg and Memel up through Livonia, tearing the countryside, raze Tallin, then maneuver around Petrograd to reach Murmansk, Russia's main oil center. After siezing that we have what we want and can sign peace with Russia. Then we will build a railroad spanning from Paris and Nice through Belgium, Berlin, Prussia, Livonia, to Murmansk that will bring oil to any city we need. So, is it a plan?" the kaiser proposes.

"Sounds fair." Ludendorff says.

"Yes, sounds brilliant." Moltke assures.

"Let's just hope nothing happens until then..." Barbarossa sounded nonconfident.

And there concludes a meeting with the leaders of our empire. By now you should be getting out a lighter because keeping this article to this point is grossly illegal and treason! Read next week to see how these plans develop!

Only time will tell the outcome of this crazy war, although this week we have a plan! I'm Mmm...Donuts writing.

Very cool. I like the pictures of slaughter and the unbiased viewpoint. To tell you the truth, the endless embargos and treaties among so many nations did a good job of confusing me. Anyways, the best wars are bloody, vendetta type scraps which you had for awhile. Sounds like the french have been broken though so it'll be just a mop-up operation from there on.
