This is the Iowa Class battleship as the class appeared in the Korean War and 1950s. I darkened the colors compared to my other two Iowas and gave it less civ color, the less civ color the better IMO. The differences between the Korean War/1950s Iowa and the WWII version was the removal of the following: all 20mm guns, the aircraft, the catapults and the aircraft crane on the fantail. A larger mast and radar were mounted on the aft funnel.

I took a break from working on the Moskva to get this out the door. I wasn't sure whether I was going to do this one or not, but I decided I didn't like using a WWII Iowa in El Justo's TCW which starts in 1950.

01-04-2011 Went over the unit once more to eliminate all stray pixels around the edges and more noticeable blinking pixels.

05-22-07: Kept file as version 1.1. Went over the unit once more to eliminate all stray pixels around the edges, especially in the attack animations.

09-07-06: Fixed a mistake I made in the timing of the gunblasts. Most people won't notice it, but it drove me nuts.

Version 1.2 (02-22-2011):

Good effects but you need to branch out more. You can only rearange the deck chairs on the Titanic so many times. I don't think there's been a single unit that has been redone more than your Iowa.

Wyrmshadow raises a good point, though since I made a Titanic myself, I must say it sure is fun re-arranging those chairs!:D

Still, the boat looks great, the effects aren't anything new, but they still look excellent (and I'm the last to complain about re-using effects:mischief: ) Only gripe is, shouldn't this thing get blown back even a bit by those cannons going off?

Still,

No, it shouldn't. Each indvidual barrel has a four foot recoil, which absorbs quite a bit of energy. Also, the sheer mass of the battleship in addition to the resistance the water provides, are additional factors weighing against such an idea. The thought that these ships move sideways any significant amount is a myth.

Plus, I refuse to give my units a cartoonish look or animation like Firaxis does.

Here is a good write up about the idea that battleships move sideways when their big guns fire:

I agree Wyrmshadow does have a point, and it's no secret the Iowas are my favorite, and I have been doing them to death. However, seeing that there are scenarios out there that cover the three wars/eras* the ships were part of, I wanted to have the Iowas in their proper configuration according to the time period. Some people could care less, and a few, like me, prefer to have the era specific look.

It is time for me to get on with the other ships in my list, and of course, the next one to be finished will be the Moskva helo carrier.

That would change things, you be right, it sure is fun to see things getting launched by ginourmous recoil though, but that's just my demolition addiction speaking:crazyeye: :D

Yes I have to admit that is the one Firaxian characteristic I put into my units, the recoil. And yes I redo some of my old stuff too, but only when it's really dated and I can make it 100% better. VJ's program is so powerful that there really isn't all that much different from his 1st Iowa to his present ones. yes there are better effects now, but nothing super drastic.

Oh, my Favorite Battleship in my favorite Era!

Resplendent stuff, my good man! I look forward with deploying it with Toledo and Helena.

Dragonbird, quit spamming my threads with that "dingy" line. I will never do a request for you as long as you keep it up. If you have nothing to post but sarcasm, go somewhere else.

It's old and tiresome, give it a rest.

Wyrmshadow made a fletcher for SOE that is updated from his earlier fletcher. Vingrjoe I agree anyone that cant be constructive should not bother to comment.

I only used that line once before this... sorry, I'll stop

:Edit:
The guns would really spectacular if you would put a delay in between the different cannons, because I dont think they would fire all at once each and every time. Just a suggestion.

No, they usually don't. Broadsides are mostly done for photo ops and impressing the brass.

It's too much work to put a delay between each of the nine barrels. On my Des Moines I put a delay only between the turrets, not the individual guns. I like both the full broadside, and the sequential firing like my Des Moines has. Although, I somewhat prefer the visual effect of a full broadside.
