Sort of a stew of terrains I put together. This started with a request by Blue Monkey for some bamboo forests, and got out of hand. Elements of this are by Ares De Borg, Pounder, Womak, and Goldfool. Original elements include Asian Forests, redone Jungles, bamboo trees (where Pine forests used to be), Original and tweaked mountains, and a redone oasis resource.

The Download link is here. Now some screenies:

Hope someone finds this useful.

Wow. Simply wow. That has to be the best terrain I've seen recently. Really good work.

Thanks for doing this. As you said in the PM, the SP mod has temporarily delayed my own work. The terrains are very nice.

for anyone interested in the originally intended use of a bamboo terrain, the essential discussion starts here & continues through posts 285, 298-302, 320-321, 330, 341, 362, 366 of the same thread. "Forests placed at start will mostly be LM Forest, so when cut down, the replanted forest will be Bamboo (which is in the "standard" Forest graphics place). Workers could of course also plant Bamboo where jungle had been removed."

Balthasar, may I please ask you to do a "brighter, greener" version of the bamboo? Something along this color range: Bamboo & tiger, Bamboo grove, Bamboo. Something almost "Crouching Tiger"ish, not quite as vivid as the forest in House of Flying Daggers. I'm looking for something with a distinctly bamboo color, yet bright enough to match the jungle in Ares' newer set:

It's always good to see a new terrain set; I really like this set, particularly the woodland. Nicely done :).

Thank you Oz, Virote, Deth, Tank, Blue, Rob (good to see you!) and Ares for your kind remarks. I'm particularly pleased that you like it, Ares, since it builds so much on your fine work! Trees like this, I've discovered, are tricky - make 'em too big and you lose the "forest" effect, while if you make 'em too small they lose all differentiation, and you might as well use the fireaxis trees. The jungles in this turned out darker in-game than they are in the file, for example, and the trees on the MountainsForests turned out lighter! So I'm still learning the ins and outs of it all.

Hi Balthasar. This is a very fetching set of terrain, thanks very much for posting it. I especially like the mountains, which I think you've taken from Womok's terrain? One request (plea!) I might make is that you do some work on the transition between the mountains and the hills. At the moment there's quite a stark line between the mountain squares and others - I've noticed this when experimenting with these mountains before.

Keroro: you're quite right, most of the Mountains were originally from Womok's terrain, though I've recolored most of them. You're also right about the transition from Mtns to hills, especially now that I've removed most of the grass from their bases. They always did look kind of square, but I love the look of them. Y'know, I think I might just have an answer though, give me a couple of days to make some changes, see what we can do.

Hmm, you have me interested! ;) I will watch closely... I think one of the few elements of Ares' latest terrain set that I would change would be the mountains - Womok's are wonderfully evocative.

This terrain set is fantastic, Balthasar. A real mood setter!
Your trees are so beautiful.

Brilliant terrain set.

Thanks very much for doing them Balthasar. I've had a good look at them in game now, and they do look a lot better and fit in with the other terrain types very nicely indeed. Your changes have convinced me to use the mountains fulltime now.

I'm going to start to try working in your forests too. They are very much better than the standard ones. :)

Balthasar - Sorry for the bump - I noticed you've been playing with this terrain again recently, and it is one I find quite useful... Just wondering if you've made any tweaks to it in the past 4.5 years since the last release?
