Update:
the ship that avenged pearl harbor..the essex class fleet carrier...

version 2
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads5/flattopv2.zip

as usual...i pointed the sound to exisiting place (destroyer still)

included the usual goodies..pedia icons, unit 32 ....

i know the ship does look a bit "mechanical"..prob cuz of palette and the fact that im still learning how to model units the "civ3 way"

i might revisit this unit since i like this ship a lot..and im not totally happy yet as how this unit look..but i figured to give it to you guys as a version 1....

Just 2 suggestions on what you could do on the next version

1) You might want to instead have the guns fire to the right of the ship, like the battleship does, and then you set the "rotate bnefore attack" flag

2) Would also be neat if you put some tiny planes on the runway for effect (as the runway seems kinda big and empty hehe)

other then that looks pretty sharp, I hope to see more units on the way :D

I think the runway is simply a litte bit too broad and the civ-colored squares look a bit funny, too.
Small planes on the runway would make the unit look nicer but IMO doesn't fit to Civ-style.

But hey, still nice unit :)
I'm looking forward to Version 2!

PapaJohns,
did you make this with pov-ray? Then you could add some planes I did to the runway (I posted the pov-ray files in the forums). Then it would look a bit better.

Nice model ;)

You certainly have a knack for making useful stuff! This makes a great industrial era animation for the carrier! I certainly hope you will post updated versions as they come along! :)

A few comments:
To let the guns fire sideways is a great idea (for the escort as well by the way), since most late ships are longer than the square size (which is bad), and thus tend to overlap when fighting each other unless they rotate, which looks a bit funny.

I like the civ colored elevators, but they look as if the border was above deck level. Maybe you could make them go up and down in the fidget flic? Perhaps they could carry one of the small fighters?

I like the large beam though! Good civ ships have to be short and fat. ;)

Nice! If you plan on revising it, I think that some detail on the deck would make it about perfect.

Maybe you could make the ship in the flic to be a bit higher in the water, like in the pediaicon preview? When I looked in FLICster, the ship looks seriously overloaded, especially in the side view. The default E anim looks almost as if it were just about to sink... The Japanese will have too easy a time. :)

P.S. It makes sense, however, if both the new carrier and the escort fire their guns in the same direction as the corresponding civ units. Otherwise one cannot use them as era specific animations.

the reason the ship is short and the deck too fat is cuz you need it to be so in the game the ship doesnt appear too thin and long...

the elevator deck, they look a bit above deck cuz they have to be..otherwise at the game level flcs they will disappear if they are aligned to the deck (too small from far distance)

the ship is above water the same amount as in the pediaicon preview.. the problem is that during palette conversion it ate my shadow...hence the ship has no shadow and thus look a bit flat .. i need to figure out exactly how to make the red shadow stand out more without making my ship look red

the model is in povray... and i did think about putting planes on the deck but i was keeping it consistent with the existing carrier which had no planes... and i did think about the firing on the side too.. but i dunno why i didnt do it :p

This unit is too flat, regardless of a lack of shadow. I'm only trying to offer constuctive criticism here, maybe it's just the angle the animations were captured in, it may be a bit too high up over the ship, because the pedia icon looks stunning, and the animations look like they came from a different model.

The decks were wood. My wife's grandfather served on the USS Shangri-La which was an Essex Class carrier. Who cares about that though, I am glad to see this unit. Nice job.
