I see what you mean, the lights I was using before were omni lights (a light like a 'sun') which uniformly brightens everything. It results in something like above.

I'm not sure if setting up more direct spot lights would solve the problem, but it has been somewhat of an issue since day 1 (one which I'm getting sick of to say the least ).

Let me mess around with it and see what I can do.
