City Density in iOS

Is there any penalty on city workers/growth if I put my cities very close together and build courthouses?

From the UI it looks like they overlap without any penalty.

Has anyone confirmed this?

Well, each given tile can only be worked by one city at once. So, unless you need to run very specialised cities, or your nation is one big Magna Carta-powered GP farm, Courthouses and high density city placement is a bit of a waste of hammers.
