Hah! Finally a graph I have something of substance to say about.
A major issue with this article:
It stresses the idea of a friction between Western "Catholic" Sentiment and Eastern "Atheist-Folklore"-Sentiment. Symbolized by the supposedly Catholic "CDU" [which is currently lead by
protestant and never as before party-dominating chancellor (Merkel), oversight by a
protestant (former pastor) President] and the rather atheist "DIE LINKE".
The "CDU" - translated meaning the "Christian Democratic Union" - has fairly strong polls in Eastern Germany. It did so since reunification. Which is due to the fact that the SPD - the Social Democratic Party and oldest party of Germany - does relatively poorly in Eastern Germany.
So while "Die Linke" is relatively strong in Eastern Germany, the "SPD" is very weak and the CDU is happy to take the votes.
The weakness of the SPD has its historic roots in the process of GDR (East Germany) party integration. The flag socialist party of the GDR (SED) was not integrated by the flag West German kinda-socialist party (SPD) [it used to be quit socialist up until the 50s]. The SED turned into the autonomous PDS and eventually joined with the West-German WASG (how this party came about is a story of its very own - painfully short version - the reforms everyone is praising Germany for nowadays caused it) to form the new "Die Linke".
All the while, the CDU integrated the GDR-version of the CDU just nicely and ever since has resilient structures in East Germany. The SPD not so much
Saying: This narrative of Catholic versus Atheist has probably
some merit. But most of all it is simplistic journalistic blabbering.
Though I am sure metatron had some more interesting thoughts to offer.
I'll just flash
