Dawn of the Middle Kingdom [DoC]

Strategery Meeting.

A second Great Scientist has been generated,
but we bank him, obviously, as Calendar is 4 turns away.

Rome almost always invariably collapses sometime or another.
Occasionally, if you have a 2 move unit, you can capture Rome
when it collapses and use it as a springboard to harass the rest of Europe.
This is possible because when the city turns Barbarian/Independent,
all units except for naval units & Workers get removed somehow.
I've done it once before with a Woodsman 2 Warrior and about twice with a parked
Chariot, in vanilla RFC that is, but it certainly is possible in DoC as well.

The other reason why you should park in Rome is so you can establish
early contact with the Europeans, for the express purpose of undermining
them and playing them off one another.

Oh, and tech trading.

Speaking of tech trading, we get Iron Working for Aesthetics.

The second necessary step on the way to the 4 Cathedrals UHV goal.
That and as soon as I get my Plantation resources up, I can raise my happy
cap even further.

Now that Calendar is done, we use our Great Scientist to bulb Compass.
Why Compass? Well, certainly not for Explorers.
China's old 2nd UHV goal (Lose no cities to Mongolians or Barbarians before 1400)
has been changed to a goal relating to the Four Great Chinese Inventions.
I must be the first to discover Compass, Paper, Gunpowder & the Printing Press.
A much more appropriate (but still easy) goal for China.

A couple notes about some civics here.
Remember Wonders like The Pyramids, The Parthenon & friends?
Well, you can't build them now.
Unless you're running Pantheon that is, which requires Polytheism.
You can't have a state religion while you're running Pantheon,
but the tradeoff is well worth it in the early game, and we want to snatch some critical Wonders.

Also, as for Forced Labor (Slavery), it is no longer unlocked via Bronze Working.
Now, to obtain this civic, one must research or obtain Masonry, which is also
a little more appropriate.

This is one of the best city spots in the game.
No, I'm not being sarcastic here.
With the Great Cothon, you can rack up +19 Hammers from the sea alone.
We settle immediately, and pop a Missionary so we can get
the seafood while the city works on The Great Cothon.

Subbed.

Wunderbar.

We are beaten to the very valuable Temple of Artemis.
Most likely by either Rome or Greece.
That's alright, because that failgold will serve us very well.
It is a shame though; in concert with a wonder like The Great Lighthouse,
it can definitely carry the player's economy through the early half of the game.

Speaking of The Great Lighthouse, we actually do manage to snag that one.

A little note about The Oracle;
this particular wonder has been nerfed slightly from it's original incarnation.
One still receives a free tech upon completion, but there is a catch.
I can't use The Oracle to snag a tech outside of my era.
So if there's a Medieval tech on research list like say, Feudalism,
I wouldn't be able to get it because I'm in the Classical Era.

Rome fans, rejoice! Their new UP is Mandate Armies;
Each time Rome enters a war with a Mediterranean power, they
get a free stack of 3 Legions & 2 Catapults teleported right inside
their enemies' borders. This doesn't work as well all of time (sometimes,
those idiots spawn on an island or on the other side of the enemy borders)
but it's a great, quick and dirty way to get shock value in your wars.

In the picture here, Rome just declared war on Greece and their troops
are in a very prime position to take out either Athens or Sparte.

Also, this UP only works for certain civs:
Greece, Egypt, Phoenicia, Persia, Babylonia.
But that's still at least 15 Legions & 10 Catapults.

We take the Parthenon, which allows us to use any Government civic
regardless of whether we have the prerequisite or not.
I want to grow a little longer with Monarchy and this is currently a critical stage
for development, so I don't want to risk another turn of Anarchy until after 1000 AD.

Rome conquers Athens, as you can see here.
Our Warrior watches on the sidelines as the Legions loot the city.

The Great Wall is now completed. This is also a wonder that has been changed.
It now requires Confucianism to be present in your city; this change was very obviously
directed to nerf Rome, who often built The Great Wall as a get-out-of-jail free card against all the barbarian waves intended for it.
For the player, this a bit of a drawback, but before people cry foul, I've been able to complete the Rome UHV (the new ones at that)
without The Great Wall, complete every objective AND crush Spain, France & England on spawn before.
Playing the new Rome will greatly improve micromanagement skills.

And to end it here, Rome successfully collapses Greece...
which may or may not be a bad thing when you see what I mean in the future.

The Greek collapse MUST be a good thing given your UP. Now you only have to worry about the Indians and Arabs to worry about getting techs before you.

Corea.

See here, the Coreans have spawned in 55 BC.
They are a new addition, along with a number of other civs,
which I'll be documenting and commenting on later.
The Coreans play like a mini-China/Vikings right now,
with a smaller Cathedral goal and a sink 20 ships goal.
Along with another one that I can't remember off the top of my head.
I have personally suggested that they should have a UHV goal where they
must culture flip 1 Chinese & 1 Japanese city
(to represent Hallyu; or the pop culture explosion in South Corea that is
overtaking mainstream Chinese & Japanese pop culture)
but sadly, it hasn't been implemented. I'm holding out hope though.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to see how well the Coreans perform.
Because they're just going to have to die.

We complete the Great Cothon in Dagou, making the city immediately productive.

Goodbye, Wang Kon.

PROTIP:
In all versions of RFC, when a civ newly spawns,
they'll move almost all of their troops out of their capital,
making it a prime window of opportunity for you to choke the baby in the cradle.
And since East Asia is China's backyard...

...We need to preserve our hegemony.
Quick note about the spawn rush though.
Make sure you have at least x3 the amount of troops as they newly born enemy.
Rhye attempted to prevent spawn rushing by causing newly born civs to spawn
free defenders upon participating in battle on their birthdate.
Fortunately for me, the Coreans do not spawn any extra Archers,
and as I only had 5 Chariots, it would have stopped my offensive dead in its' tracks.

I score another critical Wonder; The Great Library.
After I build The Pantheon (+50% GP Birth Rate in the city),
we will have completed all of the wonders we need that require Pantheon.

Haojing is settled late.
Normally, in RFC, I'd take Hanoi and Guangzhou,
but now that I prefer building a city in Taiwan,
I find that this setup is far superior.

If one still wishes to keep Hanoi, it's better for the China player in DoC,
considering that some of the tiles you'll be inevitably claiming (the Yunnan tiles)
now count as Historical for China (as they should be).

We found Catholicism.

I did this for seven reasons; which I'll go into detail.
This is definitely the new optimal strategy for China.

1) Wonders. A number of powerful Wonders are tied to Catholicism; such as The Hagia Sophia (+50% GP birth rate in ALL cities), San Marco Basillica (more trade routes) & a few others.

2) Superior religion. No, I'm not making a statement here.
Anyone who's read The Celestial Bureaucracy knows that I walk the line of the blasphemous.
Catholic religious buildings are the ONLY religious buildings that provide HAMMERS.
The Catholic Monastery, Church & Cathedral, all give +2 Hammers, making them more valuable than other religious buildings.

3) Shrine income. Shrine income is capped in DoC,
but it's still a free 20GPT that adds up over the long term.

4) Improved relations with the Europeans.
This is necessary for tech trading and OBs with the Europeans.
(In DoC, Europeans are almost always Christian,
and have a heavy intolerance towards other religions)

5) The Apostolic Palace. In DoC, The AP switches the Holy City site to the city where you built it. We need to be first to Theology to make sure no European steals our monopoly.

6) The Reformation. The Reformation is a new event in DoC that happens
as soon as the first Catholic civ discovers Printing Press.
You can choose to adopt (and host the Holy City) of Protestantism and gain 500 Gold or not.
If yes, all our Catholic buildings are converted to Protestant buildings and our State Religion becomes Protestantism.
Obviously, we want that 500 Gold, as well as more Monasteries to fuel China's tech.

7) METY stopped updating Monotheistic Asia.

Well... I pretty much quit that story anyway. Also, in mine, I specifically avoided founding non-monotheistic religions, so my Europe will be more messed up than yours. :p

Well... I pretty much quit that story anyway. Also, in mine, I specifically avoided founding non-monotheistic religions, so Europe will be more messed up than yours. :p

Actually, no.

European nations spawn already as Catholic in DoC,
to prevent the vanilla RFC syndrome of Muslim Europe.

Is that true in 3000BC?

Are you going for historical victory in this game?

@Fresol: It's nice to see a player from the DoC forum read my story!
I hope the others will stumble across this too.
Also, I can't say anything about what victory I'm going after.
That would be a spoiler after all.

Byzantines.

In this picture, I generate my 3rd Great Scientist.
Also, note the Cho-Ko-Nus assembling on the fleet of Galleys.
The Chinese UU now requires Construction, instead of Machinery.

We have completed The Pantheon.
This handy little wonder provides +50% Great Person birth rate in the city of completion.
Unfortunately, this wonder has been removed in the latest commit of the SVN version.
Enjoy it while it's still in 1.81, folks!

Our Woodsman Warrior in the Far West has encountered Justinian!
That's right, Byzantines are a playable civilization in DoC!
I won't touch too much on them, but they have a conditional spawn;
they'll only come out when either Greece or whoever's holding Greece is unstable.

The Byzantines magically teleport our Warrior into Roman territory though.

We have now acquired Music, the last essential step needed to build Cathedrals.
I'll admit that sometimes I forget it's needed for Cathedrals.

Our generated Great Scientist is also expended to bulb Paper.
That's 2 out of 4 techs required for the 2nd Chinese UHV condition completed.
Now, all we need is Gunpowder & Printing Press (which synergizes with the Catholicism gambit)

The Byzantines spawn if Rome at 330 AD holds at least 2 cities outside its core, and the buffed Roman UP makes it very possible.

It's clear you're going for DOM. What with no GAs up to this time?

Also, gyros. XD XD XD I love gyros.

Shame you're no playing on SVN though. Kunming (Historical, robs the Dhaka Rice and Pagan Tea) is a nice spot even before Biology.

Or Epic. DOM is easier on Epic.

P.S. RD is Best Pony!

Japan.

Great Scientist #4 is on deck, ready to go up to bat.
He's used to partially bulb Education,
as we intend to win the Liberalism race.

Hmmm...I wonder what this fleet is for...

Can you guess?

Yep. We're attacking Japan. On spawn of course.
In DoC, their spawn date was moved to 530AD.
They also happen to start out with some highly anachronistic Samurai & Crossbowmen.
Historically, the nascent Samurai were mounted horse archers during this time period.
But we can overlook that.

The Samurai were distracted by a number of shiny metal rocks in the immediate vicinity of Kyoto.
So our Cho-Ko-Nus took advantage of the situation and walked right through the backdoor.

Kyouto is burned down, with the navy citing bad feng shui.

While that's out of the way, we make an official switch to Catholicism
now that we're running Patriarche and not Pantheon.
Many an Aphrodite worshipper wept that day :(

The Corean & Japanese natives initially refused to join the Chinese Empire;
raving and ranting that their razed cities were not an affront to feng shui and that they
had learned everything they knew about home improvement from a show called "Tool Time".

Qin Shi Huang, who had built two new cities over the old spots,
had to think of something fast to win their loyalty.
He went into the kitchen and demanded that his cooks prepare the gyros,
as they were the ultimate diplomatic tool that solves all problems.
However, since the recipe for gyros was never actually comprehended,
the guys in the kitchen just BS'ed it at the last minute.

What they ended up giving to the Coreans & Japanese was this:

Despite not being a gyro, it was still very delicious and the two conquered peoples asked for more.
The newly dubbed egg roll won them over and they agreed to join the Empire.

Oh. And we finish the Hagia Sophia.
This is seriously one of the best wonders in the game here.
+50% GP birth rate in all cities.
Which synergizes with China's 3rd UHV goal (also in RFC Synthesis)
where China must achieve 4 Golden Ages before 1800.

Great Story! I always love to see how others position themselves as China (one of my favorites) because I usually play for 100ish turns then die:cry:

On another note: I take it the mongols will be crushed like the Koreans and Japanese, 1 turn after spawning?
