A simple enough question. Do you believe there is only one truth out there? (i.e. Plato's philosophy?) I don't particularly care what truth you do or do not believe in, but I was wondering how many people believe in a single, indelible truth.

I do- its a fairlly big facet of my faith (Roman Polytheism) , fo thier being one, huge, undeniable truth out thier, of which religion and science intertwine into, and to which all religions are mere local aspects, or interpritations of.

No probably not. Maybe. Math could be, but it is still only existent in our minds. Therefore it is useless without us. Since human perception and cognition is domed to relevitism, and is not eternal, I think not.

No, there are a lot of truths. Everything that has to do with humans is subjective.

In absolute terms, there is, by its very definition, only one truth. It's quite logical and obvious.

Now, in practical terms, and particularly human terms, there is the point of view that is extremely important. And though there is one truth, there is thousands ways of looking at it.

Remove all the variables in the Universe and there can only be One Absolute Truth.

The only problem arises from our lack of knowledge.

I think there is Truth, and I think there is only one God/the Good. However, I doubt if humans will ever grasp it in this world. I'm not saying, by the way, that there is only one true religion-- almost all religions aspire to the Good.

It's like a colossal cut diamond, entire and whole. But so many reflaections and refractions it is impossible to ever describe it.

There is by definition only one truth, but we can only make approximations to it, it will never be totally reached. (Sir Karl Popper, Austrian philosopher)
So yes, there is truth, but what humans claim to be the truth is only an opinion, more or less close to the actual truth.

I believe that objective truth exists. In other words, we really are carbon based life forms on a planet circling a sun and so forth. But as a couple of other posters pointed out, we humans are stuck inside our own heads and we can never obtain total epistemic certainty. In other words, even though I believe that the world exists objectively, i.e. outside my own head, there is no way to be sure that we are not in some kind of Matrix scenario. So I do bleive in 'one truth' in the sense that factual statements can be correct and incorrect in the sense that they succeed or fail to describe the objective world accurately.

How could it be otherwise?

Even if we are in some Matrix world, there would still be a "true" world.

There is no "One" truth. There can be truth only because there are sentient beings who can come up with the concept of truth, and then there are as many truths as sentient beings.
That's the truth ;)

Yes, there is one truth. It's up to you to accept it or not.

There is one truth, but what we perceive is not the truth. It is merely our perception (i.e. distortion) of it. As Percy Shelly says, we only get the echo of the sound of the river from which knowledge (or truth) is derived.

Yes. You can't have two truths because contradicting facts would mean that at least one side is wrong.

I believe in the ultimate and undeniable truth that a totally socialist state is the only morally justifiable thing, since working together for a common goal is far better than competing with one another for the sole purpose of making money and manipulating society in the process.
