By popular demand with new management comes a new thread. Previous thread is at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=504172.

From previous thread:
Spoiler :

I'm helping Leoreth with Dynamic Civ Names while he focuses on more crucial aspects of the game that actually affect game balance. He has approved most of these changes but we have decided to release a trial version here first to garner more feedback from the player community.

Guess it's time to post this now before people get too sad.

BenZL43 and I have been exchanging some PMs and we will try to keep this project going. It has a good objective and would be nice to eventually have in the mod. Here is what I need:

1. Current files from somebody using this. I need "DynamicCivs.py" and any file that fits "DynamicNames_[Civilization].xml" The former should be found in Assets\Python and the latter ones in Assets\XML\Text. Preferably after the Indonesia addition but before works also.

2. Support. If you truly want this give a yes vote and some encouraging remark. (Do not post these in this thread. Do not post in older one either after there are 10 votes). I do not want to put time into this if it is only going to be used by a few. If I get 7 votes of yes I will do this and with 10 I will give updates more often.

3. Suggestions. I can code for this and that is about it. If I really need a name I will go after it but other than that it will be completely up to you.

Scheduling:

With 7 votes I give an update every fortnight, with 10 every week.

My first update will likely be as soon as possible, which could be a week and could be three, depending on how much time I have and if I get the most recent Indonesia update or not. My Python is a bit rusty after a couple months off.

All updates will be zip folders posted on this thread. The most recent update that I have will also be available on this post or the next.

Leoreth, if you could put a link in the opening post of this thread to this post or the next, it would be much appreciated. (Old.)

If this falls through for any reason and you would like to continue it, PM me or if that will not work send an e-mail to the address in an included credits page (Probably won't see this).

Thank you all.
This is compatible with 1.12 and SVN.

The following post has lists of changes which includes features and the current version zip folder. The third post has instructions on how to change specific dynamic names.

This should be compatible with any modmod to DoC, and is a companion of City Name Manager Extra.

Credits to Leoreth and anybody listed in the overall DoC credits for making the mod what it is today, along with iOnlySignIn for originally creating this. Shame it seems he will not be returning. Also a thank you to yurisusuki for keeping and providing the files after iOnlySignIn left.

For any extra information feel free to PM me or BenZL43.

Here is where I will be posting my changelog, keeping track of what is to be added in the latest version, and the most recent version. Maybe also some instructions, but who needs those :D?

How to edit names yourself:

If you see a name that you don't like or want to change, proceed. If you see a name that is offensive in any way or makes absolutely no sense, post below or contact either of us. We will then do some research and if it is a good claim it will be changed.

Go to Assets\XML\Text\DynamicNames_ .xml for the civilization you wish to change.

Find the name you wish to change (usually you can tell the conditions), delete it, and put in a different one.

Adding a name can be done through Python and a bit of XML. You can look for tutorials on how to do this (I think I wrote something up in the main RFC forum), though Python is fairly intuitive and if you are ambitious enough I think you can probably figure it out.

How about maybe changing Babylon's name with its capital at Jerusalem to something related to Kingdom of Israel or something? It's just that I've got them in that position in my current game, they also lost every other city and it's weird seeing them as Babylonian Empire still.

It should be if and only if the era is Classical or Ancient, not bEmpire:

Kingdom of Judah: Capital at Jerusalem, OCC.

Spoiler :
Code:
if iEra <= iClassical:
	if capital.getName() == "Jerusalem":
 if not bEmpire:
 self.setCivDesc(iPlayer, "TXT_KEY_CIV_BABYLONIA_JUDAH")
 [COLOR="Blue"]return[/COLOR]

Kingdom of Israel: Capital at Jerusalem, Not bEmpire (maximum city = 2 then) and city.getX=73 and city.getY<42
Coordinates of Sur is afaik (73,40) and Jerusalem is afaik (73,38), but city.getY<42 makes sure all the cities are in Levants.

Spoiler :
Code:
I have no idea actually, but I hope this one works... :p

if iEra <= iClassical:
	for city in lCities:
 if capital.getName() == "Jerusalem" and city.getX() = 73 and city.getY() < 42:
 if not bEmpire:
 self.setCivDesc(iPlayer, "TXT_KEY_CIV_BABYLONIA_ISRAEL")
 [COLOR="Blue"]return[/COLOR]

I will likely not be adding this one because Babylonia is no more deserving of a specific name for Israel than Persia or Phoenicia.

Code addition (won't do these in future):
Spoiler :
More elegant way would be to find specific names for Babylonia and add
Code:
if iEra <= Classical and capital.getName() == "Urushalim" and not bEmpire:
	self.setCivDesc(iPlayer, "TXT_KEY_CIV_BABYLONIA_ISRAEL"

Then add the text key in the DynamicNames_Babylonia.xml and give your name.

Reloading the assets (reload the game) will give you the new name.

Please add custom vassal names for Russia. Currently, they have a lot of custom names for Soviet Union but outside of that, Russia is lacking.

3. Suggestions. I can code for this and that is about it. If I really need a name I will go after it but other than that it will be completely up to you.

;)

Here is my plan of action right now:

First stage: go through all of the names and try to come up with replacements for ones that are not historical. This shouldn't take too long as there are very few of these.

Second stage: vassals. Ideally I will be able to find something specific for each civilization which they used to name their vassals. Think Satrapy for Persia or Viceroyalty for Spain. Hopefully also more specific ones.

Third stage: more creative naming for certain religions. Adal Sultanate is an example of this. Currently it is mostly Islamic names, but I hope to expand it to others as well.

What do you think about some of the suggestions that were refused in the other thread, such as Assyrian names for modern Christian Babylonia/Iraq and Taiping Heavenly Kingdom for Christian China?

Assyria for modern Babylon/Iraq: no. Specific religious names stop between 1700 and 1800, depending on the civilization as an approximation of nationalism. I do not want to use the actual nationalism tech in case someone gets extremely far behind tech-wise.

China: probably not. I don't really want to mess with China after what iOnlySignIn did, as it is a beautiful mechanic. I think in some cases the civilization will take precedence over the religion if there was never truly that state religion, especially if it was post 1800 and only lasted 15 years.

But half the fun of dynamic names is finding the Easter Eggs. Just a thought!

First stage: go through all of the names and try to come up with replacements for ones that are not historical. This shouldn't take too long as there are very few of these.

I mentioned it in the other thread, but I'll echo it again in case anyone else missed it. For a Spain or Portugal which controls the entire Iberian Peninsula, the name Iberian Union is not actually historical. It was created by modern historians. The name that was actually used at the time (and even centuries prior to the union being formed) was the Empire of All Hispania.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberian_Union

Wikipedia is actually an amazing source for the historical names of civilizations and empires that no longer exist today. For example, you can see the links below the map on that page lead to potential names for vassals of the Spanish Empire.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Italy

It also includes important geographical information and a timeline. For example, the Duchy of Milan was a constituent of the Holy Roman Empire from 1395 to 1797. Later, it was named the Transpadane Republic and then the Cisalpine Republic (with a few geographic differences) while it was controlled by the French Republic. From 1815 to 1866, it went back under the control of the Austrians as the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia. From 1861 to 1946 it was part of the Kingdom of Italy, and now it's part of the Italian Republic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Milan

So, if you want to go in-depth on this stuff, you really can. I found the naming detail to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the Europa Universalis games. I like the gameplay in Civ much more though, so it's a great combination.

What do you think about some of the suggestions that were refused in the other thread, such as Assyrian names for modern Christian Babylonia/Iraq and Taiping Heavenly Kingdom for Christian China?

There is no precedent for an Assyrian nation-state in the modern day.
Therefore, we cannot make up one based on that rationale alone.

The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom is not Christian as well, nor is it a state worth including from its tenuous and short-lived regional rule.
On the religion side, it was more similar in vein to Eastern Lightning and Aum Shinrikyo, two modern day millenarian cults.
On the state side, if we include it, we may as well justify including the individual entities of the Three Kingdoms Era or even the Shun Dynasty.

And as was already said back in the other thread, that's not really true.

Egyptian Capital in Athena, or any Greece city state: Greco-Egyptian Empire .

Not that it's historical at all, but when I play Egyptians, I always capture Greece first.

Okay, I've gone through and will release the next version about 48 hours from now. As one can see from above posts, I have a list of

- Make United Kingdom name for England more likely in modern era
- Less generic fascist names
- Less generic communist names
- Add Sri Lanka names for Tamils

United Kingdom: Will make "United Kingdom of Great Britain" the democratic name, though you will see Commonwealth in the Renaissance and maybe early Industrial. No British Empire for modern era except with Fascism, may do this for other European Empires as well.

Fascist and Communist names: will start this this time and probably finish it by next. Suggestions preferred, can also be for regions (People's Republic for most of Asia already exists). List of civs to do this for:

Fascist: Phoenicia (Lebanon, not Carthage), Ethiopia, France, Mali, Maya, Mongolia, Moors, Spain, Thailand, Tibet

Communist: Argentina, Brazil, Phoenicia (Lebanon, not Carthage), Colombia, Congo, Ethiopia, Austria, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mali, Maya, Mongolia, Moors, Mughals, Netherlands, Iran, Poland, Rome, Spain, Tamils, Thailand, Tibet, Vikings

Sri Lanka: Pretty Obvious. Question is should it be Industrial / Modern or only Modern

You really can't use kingdom in a republican name.

You really can't use kingdom in a republican name.

If so, then use "United Republic of Great Britain" if Britain is running Republic. It would use "United Kingdom of Great Britain" if the country is running Dynasticism, even (especially?) if it is also running Representation or Universal Suffrage (or whatever the corresponding civics are with the overhaul).
