Is there a reason the HoF, and thus by extension the gauntlets, don't use some of the more obscure map types (such as the aforementioned Ring)? I think this could be quite fun as they are seemingly used infrequently.
They aren't used because you have too much knowledge about the map.
Yep that's right. Some of these maps were designed for MP so we steer clear...

no more spain gauntlets please; please have an "except spain" on future any leader gauntlets.
spain's ability coupled with certain natural wonders is game breaking. given that natural wonders are random, spain becomes the ultimate reroll civ and the one with the most potential. in the latest gminor, having found the great barrier reef on turn 4 with spain, i was able to shave a full 10% off compared to my best time with a legitimate civ.
Spain is like the Inca civ IV

a 10% better result with Civ V's Spain versus non-Spain wins pales in comparison.
I would agree that the MP maps should not be used. But others, like the new Europe script would be fun. However, I can see a reason for trying to limit the number of maps. There are already way too many combinations

This doesn't seem to preclude a Any Leader minus Issabella. For now my only option is to make Spain a required opponent when I use Any Leader.Edit: dumb, dumb, dumb - vanllia doesn't have spain.
I would have been avoiding picking a Vanilla civs with G&K just getting rolling in HOF. Using Any Leader allows an open gauntlet that includes players that don't have G&K and helps to seed new tables.
