An aberration of nature
Setting:
Project X was going nowhere. Millions of dollars of research wasted, the budget, threatening to be cut, reputations tanked. And then, there was a breakthrough, although he felt suspect calling it that since he didn’t even know what the breakthrough was. One moment he was performing experiments on a box that might have occult and supernatural properties and the next moment there was a voice that said, “Your wish has been granted mortal, you will find the power that you seek. You will regret it. The world will regret it”
And then well, that was it. An open box and a strange voice that only the indication he got that something was different.
Until he spontaneously gained the ability to breathe fire and burned himself to death in his house the next day.
The government snapped up the research, putting the project behind 10,000 layers of security and making everything about it disappear from the eyes of anyone who did not have top secret clearance to better protect it from the Soviet Union. Little did they know it was too late. That particular researcher, as they learned several years later to their chagrin, was not the only one who’d gained powers. .2 % of all the babies born in the world had.
Now in 2019, nearly .2% of the world’s population has powers, and many governments including the US have set up schools as part of the Heroes program, to ensure their particular superhuman weapons remain an asset to their respective governments, and not a threat, or at the very least, do not become a threat to society at large. The most famous and prestigious of these schools is Hero High, utterly unique in that it’s privately funded, and well connected to boot. It’s students are said to be guaranteed an admission to practically any university in the world, Harvard and Yale included, and its alumni have gone on to be very successful in all fields of life. Despite its high profile, next to nothing is known about the headmaster running the school, or how a school for heroes was even allowed to be privately funded, or the thousands of strange and unexplained phenomenons that are said to go on behind the high walls of the school. Some say the school is located in the remote mountains of New Hampshire to hide the dead bodies of students, others think it’s “private school” boast is empty and that it too serves the interests of the US government just in unique ways. Whatever the truth, it is the most competitive high school in the world to get into.

Hero High is less a “school” and more like a human ecosystem unto itself, carved on the slopes of a remote New Hampshire mountainside. You enter through the front gates, and before you lies a well trodden dirt path. On the right is the administrative building where the headmaster sits. It’s a massive imposing building which seemed to have less windows then holes in the walls. It settles onto the landscape like an iron fist. To the left is a library built in the gothic style, with its large arches and towers, it seems less like a real thing existing in this world and more like a building displaced in time. The shadows in the interior promise mystery. These are the only two buildings until nearly two miles down the road, where the school itself sits.
It’s not a very impressive building, and looks more like someone was designing a jail before they checked the employer’s request and realized they were supposed to be building a school. Scattered around the school are alot of other education buildings - labs, auditoriums, gyms and of course buildings to cater to every conceivable interest. You almost whistle at the sheer display of money that the school just flexed. The club budget might legit be equivalent to the income of a tinpot dictator in the third world. The combined staff to run this must be greater then the population of a small town. And in fact, there is a small town around this campus made up off the staff that live near here.
Off at the very back of the property, almost five miles from the entrance lies the dorm rooms. They’re very spacious affairs, with the rooms containing a kitchen and their own bathrooms, as well as leading out to a common cafeteria for those who can’t cook their own food. It’s a very luxurious setup but you can’t help but feel the design of the dorm rooms discourages you from getting to know anyone else, the better to make it so no one asks questions if you disappear …
You shake off that depressing thought. You’ve never given any credence to the conspiracy theories floating around the school.
Because the population of Hero high is so large and because there are no towns nearby, there are several stores that have been approved by the school to set up shop to the east of the school. To the west of the school there’s nothing but a large swathe of wilderness, perfect for testing one’s powers, or for hiding more unsavory things.
Intro: Welcome to Hero High, where you play as a superpowered individual going to a private boarding school for super powered individuals. Wrapped in layers of mystery and intrigue, the school hides an earth shattering secret, and is the locus of unexplained events, but you don’t necessarily have to care about that if you don’t want to. As the GM of this game, I’ll be creating events to drive the narrative, with each subsequent event building off what the previous event established. As the story goes on there might be some kind of “side quest/main event” system where side quests are integrated into the main event
Note: I already have an orientation written out that I will put up after signups, to give everyone a chance to establish their characters, before laying out the first event
