How have you customized Civ 4?

It doesn't really make sense anyway... what nation has used unmarked pirate ships in the last two hundred years? If anything you would want barbarian ships that will attack unescorted transports but can't begin to challenge any real warship.

Yesterday there was an unmarked carrier with some 80 + planes outside my city bombing our powerplants. Its true!

I've made tons of changes -
- Added a new leader trait
- Edited the existing leader traits
- Redistributed leader traits among the leaders
- Added several new units and buildings
- Added two techs
- I've made tons of existing unit and building edits
- Added 6 new civics and deleted Universal Sufferage
- Edited all of the old civics
- Edited the game speed
- Added all of the Next War stuff to the base game
- Made edits to all of the projects to account for the Next War techs
- I made several gameplay changes - no global warming / max World Wonder limit per city / etc.

I haven't gotten around to it yet but my changes would be:
Protective speeds building of bunkers and fallout shelters, maybe fort
Sentry for explorers
Apollo program needs electricity
Castles obsolete with corporation, and might add upkeep reduction, and reduced chance of revolt

I made a few of those changes -

- Sentry for scouts/explorers was a great addition. It really increased the value of these units, which I never really built previously.

- To increase the value of castles, I added a -25% city maintenance modifier. I changed the courthouses to only -25% as well for balance, and cut the building cost in half. I created a new building to replace castles when they go obsolete. The changes have worked out well.

I've not changed anything because I consider that cheating. For example, I think the Airship is a terrible addition to the game, but that is no reason for me to mod it out. That's probably because I'm multiplayer-oriented. I don't actually play many mp games lately but I do compare my games to those of some friends quite often, so everyone needs to have the same game.

But of course I use Bhruics patch, like everyone else.

I (like everyone else) found I never used ironclads and didn't like how early airships came. I changed:

- Airships to require combustion (but not oil) and took away their sub-spotting ability.
- Removed the no-ocean-travel nerf to ironclads, and bumped the strength to 15

I also have the Apollo Program require satellites; gave explorers the Sentry promotion up front; increased the ispreadfactor for late religions; and gave the latest religions (Islam and Taoism) 2 missionaries.

I wanted to tweak the gameplay to bring two flawed units better into the game, and also have more religions in play.

BTW - two posts above mention "BUG" - what is that? I tried to use the search function but you can imagine what happens when you search for BUG.

I don't like to change things normally, but found I just HAD to remove global warming and Airships which were both insanely stupid and annoying. Much better game for it too!

I disagree that it is cheating and more akin to making a mod for yourself. That is, of course, as long as you don't do anything silly like give the UU and/or UB of a civ you always play ridiculously powerful abilities.

I did almost the exact same thing with Civilization II that I'm doing now with Civ 4, except that with the simpler graphics for Civ II it was easier to add a completely new unit or two. In each case I played the hell out of the game over the span of several years and subsequently throwing a little spice into it to shake up the routine.
