How to get the civ names in RFC

I just need a bit of clarification. When I looked at the dynamic civ names in the RFC readme and the list of possible names on Rhye's Wiki, I just don't know what is to be done to get those names. Now, I did add in some explanations for them in the wiki but I dont seem to fully understand it or I'm not getting it right.

Can someone explain to me, in detail, how the different civ names, as shown in the wiki, actually come to be?

The names such as "Soviet China" or "French West Africa" are vassal names. They may (such as in the case of Soviet or Third Reich vassal names) depend on the current era or certain technologies.

Names such as "American peoples" are generally the very first name the civ gets, before it founds its first city.

Other names depend on your civics, and it would take too long to explain them all here. It stands to reason that Russia would be renamed to the USSR if civics such as State Property are used, and it makes sense that a Germany operating a Free Market economy would be named the Federal Republic of Germany. Most of the names can be worked out by yourself with just a little research into history

There are several exceptions, especially for the countries that best fit the Europeans' colonial empires. Also, for some weird reason, most civs have a vassal name if they were their own masters, like the Autonomous Community of Castile for Spain or Province of Italia for Rome.

Phew! Okay, I added a bunch of info to the wiki (as well as removed some incorrect stuff). Generally speaking the vassal ones don't need much figuring out, they just fit a formula. The exception is Normandy, which I think is France as a vassal of the Vikings, but I'm not sure.

Most of the mistakes I saw people making were giving far too literal explanations for the names (Caliphate of Hejaz or Caliphate of Irak... mostly the Islamic names.

Many of the countries adopt a new name after gaining a certain number of cities/amount of land. However I'm generally not sure about these, although I believe "Chinese Empire" is triggered at 8 cities. Also, some of the names involve civics like state property, police state, nationhood or occupation, and I don't know much about those.

And also, I should happen to think that the names Brittany and Normandy only pertain to when you settle in those regions and nothing more. It's because those names have been present throughout history as territorial names.

Another thing, a civilization has the word Democratic in it if it adopts a democratic civic (Universal Suffrage, etc). Democratic Republic is fine if you adopt State Property. A civ has the word republic in it if it adopts Representation as the government civic.

It's just that the government civics pertain to certain government types - Despotism speaks for itself, Hereditary Rule is for Monarchy, Representation is for Republic, Police State for Fascism and possibly Communism, Universal Suffrage for Democracy. Is this right?

I'll try to make everything clear. If I'm not mistaken, it works like this: there are 23 slots for dynamic names for each civ, each corresponding to a particular situation. However, some names may be the same for two different situations.

1. Generic name (ex. The Germans)
2. Settlers only (Germanic Peoples)
3. Under Despotism or Hereditary Rule, early, small (Holy Roman Empire)
4. Same civics, early, big (Holy Roman Empire)
5. Same civics, late, small (German Reich)
6. Same civics, late, big (Greater German Reich)
7. Under Representation or Universal Suffrage (Federal Republic of Germany)
8. Under State Property and any government civic (German Democratic Republic)
9. Under Police State, or Desp/HR with Nationhood (Third Reich)
10. Under Desp/HR with Islam as the state religion (Holy Islamic Empire)
11. Under Rep/US with Islam as the state religion (Islamic Republic of Germany)
12. Vassal of Persia (Satrapy of Germany)

The names really aren't that literal. They're quite formulaic and the diverse names had been picked to fit the formula, not the other way around.

I think a civ vassalizing itself is possible through WB, but I'm not sure. Either way, Steb's reason stands.

Rhye is from Europe, where we don't use the high-school definitions of "Republic = any democratic country" and "Democracy = Athens". Because then you have the United Kingdom and Sweden as a republic, and nowhere as a democracy, and that would just be silly. So that's why the names don't correspond to Rep/US civics.

For all civs, you get the small HR name if you have 6 or fewer cities. You get the large HR name if you have 7 or more cities.

The HR name also depends on era. Every civ changes from old to new HR names upon reaching a certain era, but the specific era varies from civ to civ. For English, Dutch and Japanese - in fact, for most civs - the change happens at era #4, which I believe is Industrial, though it might be Renaissance. (I can't remember how eras are indexed.) So Japan will remain a Shogunate until you reach the right era - or, of course, until you change to a more dominant civic.

I've noticed 2 bug whilst playing the game.

As I've followed FunkyHonky's walkthrough on youtube, this popped up while I playing Japan.
I've got the long names up on the scoreboard, and when i follow FH's step of switching to HR and Slavery on the first turn, despite not founding any cities yet, it comes up with Japanese Shogunate and not Yamato Peoples (because i havent founded any cities yet).

Also (to point out), when playing the Japanese on the 3000BC start (not the unlocked one), why is it that the two fishing boats end up not where they should be but are in the middle of a LAKE tile, with no rivers on either side.

Has anyone experienced these bugs?

The python code says the units appear on the spawn point - the boats just go on the nearest water tile. Sometimes you get lucky and they're on the sea, sometimes not - either way, founding Kyouto on the spot means you can get the boats out
