How useful is Guerilla III? And how useful is Woodsman III (BtS) likely to be?

I'm posting this topic mainly with the Gallic Warrior and Jaguar units in mind, and how they are affected and improved by these promotions.

I know Guerilla III gives you a hill attack bonus plus 30% withdrawl chance, but how many of your Gallic Warriors are you likely to promote up to Guerilla III? If a Gallic's primary job is to take cities, then aren't you better off just pursuing the City Raider promotions? Getting to both Guerilla III and City Raider III is highly unlikely to happen, so surely City Raider III should be the priority?

The same applies to the Jaguar and Woodsman III (which is added in BtS). It's rumoured that Woodsman III will give you the 30% withdrawl chance and a couple of First Strikes or First Strike chances, but I can still see most people using their Jags to attack cities, so once again City Raider III would be the target.

I'm by no means an expert at this game, so perhaps I'm missing something with regard to the Gallic Warrior/Jaguar and the Guerilla/Woodsman promotions.

Specialization is the name of the game. For your city-cracker Jags, Woodsman is likely to be mostly pointless. However, you'll need to be escorting them to the enemy city with something, and that something might as well be a Woodsman 3 Jag. Moreover, Woodsman 2 Jags are very mobile in jungles and woods, so it can pay to have a few such units for rushing border cities and such.

Its good to give Guerilla 3 to a few units in case you need to assault hill cities. Plus its always good to have a added withdrawel chance, because anything that lessens the risks of the RNG system is best in the longterm.

I have a question. In Warlords is Dun supposed to give me Guerilla promotons to a unit bulit in that city. Is it a bug that I build an axmen or any other unit and I am not given that promotion for free? Beserks have that promotion for free, but it does not require a dun. Do you know anything about it?

This is a common misunderstanding. Promotion to units built in city means those units which can get through experience also (in this case: Archery, Gunpowder and Recon). So it isn't bug, it's just how it is meant to be.

Dun only gives free guerilla promotion to archery, gunpowder and recon units.

It's always nice to have a few guerilla 3 gallic warriors. True, CR series give you better return if your goal is to take cities. But you are going to run into a few field battles anyway. Keeping a couple will keep your stack alive. 30% withdrawal is great. Guerilla series gw also do well in pillaging mines, something even mounted units (except keshiks) have problem with.

Oh, guerilla 3/CR3 gallic warriors may be difficult to get. Guerilla 3/CR2 gw are not so hard. You only need level 4 and for a charismatic leader this is no big deal. So sometimes it's the choice between Guerilla 3 or CR3. I'll give them half and half or 40:60. I just love high withdrawal rate.

I said that already, didn't you notice?

In BTS, it's even higher (50% withdrawal rate) and now when BTS is out it is known that Woodsman III gives +2 first strikes, extra 15% damage healing in same tile and +50% forest/jungle attack (the one who asked may now this already). So they're both very powerful.

I like the woodsmen promotion. Much rather have a promotion that will stay with an upgraded unit forever than to have it attached only to the special unit. When Jags had the 25% defense bonus it was lost when the unit was promoted. With baracks the Jag can be a strong scout raiding unit etc.

Yeah, I've been using Guerilla III and Woodsman III units in BtS. I also added +10% vs. melee to the GW and Jag, just to give them a small extra boost. I think they are now much better than pre-BtS.
